I have NOT yet published any of my site to the web--an old version of the site (created with FrontPage) still sits on my web hosting service server and is working fine. |
since I know next to nothing about html coding. |
I got ahead of myself and was playing around (foolishly) the other day and I believe what I did was "save to remote server." Some of my files were saved to my web hosting service server. Then, I foolishly was NOT paying attention to that the next time I opened Dreamweaver and started working on pages. To make a long story short, now when I view some pages that previously appeared fine in preview mode, they are now appearing as if there is no template. |

I'm hoping this is a classic newbie mistake, but I've gotten myself into some serious trouble and maybe someone here can help me navigate my way out. I have NOT yet published any of my site to the web--an old version of the site (created with FrontPage) still sits on my web hosting service server and is working fine. I'd developed a template, named it, and had used it successfully to create many pages in my site. I love the appearance and have been thrilled with how easy Dreamweaver 8 has been to use just from the Design View, since I know next to nothing about html coding. I should NEVER have played around with "remote server" saves, I know. in the meantime, if anyone has any idea how I can retrieve all the right files and put them in ONE place where Dreamweaver is happy and where the template is attached correctly . . . I'd be most grateful. Thanks in advance. Anne |

You are not intending to use FP any further with this site? This is an important decision to make. |
This will mean that you will work yourself into holes that you cannot get out of in Design view. The more you know about HTML (and CSS) the less |
I doubt that you have interpreted this symptom correctly. |
Let's start with the current site. Can you post a link to it? And can youshow me any pages that might be giving you this problem? |

You are not intending to use FP any further with this site? This is an important decision to make. ONCE I am satisfied with the new website design, that's correct, I do not intend to use FP any further with my site. |

Why do you say that some files appear to have been saved to your "remote server"? Where *IS* your "remote server" if not the current FP site? |

My remote server IS, in fact, at the web hosting service where my current site resides. However, the files I apparently saved there are not (forgive my lack of knowledge of the right terminology) PUBLISHED there -- I do not yet have an FTP account with my web hosting service. So right now, all my existing FP-designed pages are the only ones that are viewable on the web |

So right now, all my existing FP-designed pages are the only ones that are viewable on the web. And hence MY confusion--when I have my DW open, and on the right I have the box that lists files--there are different views available. There is the view of what's on my hard drive (my template) in the "local view." When I had all my files there, everything viewed perfectly in Preview. Then, as best I can reconstruct it, when I one day clicked on save and saved to my remote server, files were saved there. I am terrified to mess with anything on the remote server just now, and would like--for the purposes of finishing the design of my site--to get those files BACK on the 'local' view. Ever since the stupid save to the remote server, now, when I create a new page with my lovely template (and the template LOOKS fine in Preview), the new page comes up in design view with the template. But when I go to VIEW that page in preview, all the key template elements are missing--i.e., instead of seeing the picture at the top of the page there is just the file name of the jpg, the navigation bar elements are gone save for the text of the navigation, and all the font styles are gone. If you do not have FTP access to this location, then DW would have no way to PUT files there, since FTP is the only way DW uses to connect to remote |
I can appreciate your frustration and terror here - FP does a great job of cloaking all of this in smoke and mirrors. |
Why don't you call me and let me talk you through this? |

But I did at some point get prompted for the username and password to access my server--and some files clearly went "somewhere." But I also know that when I click on the "FTP" icon on my web hosting service, it informs me that I need to set up an FTP account. I haven't done that. Color me JUST stupid enough to cause myself trouble! I can appreciate your frustration and terror here - FP does a great job of cloaking all of this in smoke and mirrors. Sure did. I confess I'm a wee bit lonesome for some of it--I loved creating the site (amateurish though it was) and merely clicking "Publish to Web" and voila, it was there. Why don't you call me and let me talk you through this? Wow! I didn't know that was an option. I would love that. I am dashing out the door for the rest of the day but if we can come up with a mutually convenient time tomorrow, I'll take you up on that. And gladly reimburse you for your time and expertise. After I hit send on this, I'll try and figure out a way to contact you privately and we can set something up. I'm very, very grateful! Anne |
