Default FTP Problems with New Netgear Router - 11-16-2004 , 04:08 AM

Thanks in advance for any advice. Installed Netgear wireless router.
Works fine except when trying to FTP via Dreamweaver. I understand
that I must "open a port" in the Netgear admin area (called Port
Forwarding). Is this correct? If so, I'm confused by the
terminology. In the Port Forwarding area, it shows the service name
'FTP' and then a section to enter a "Server IP Address". What IP
address do I enter? The FTP IP address of the site I am uploading to?
My local IP address? The IP address of the router itself? As you
can see I'm confused here. Thanks again.

For using FTP in non-passive mode, that sounds correct. But if the
server allows it try turning on passive FTP mode. You do this for a Site
defined in Dreamweaver by ticking the "Use Passive FTP" checkbox in the
Site Definition dialog.

That would be your LAN address. If you're using Windows XP then type
"ipconfig /all" at a dos prompt - Your LAN address is the "IP Address"
value there, and is typically 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.0.2 for example
(depending on which netgear router you purchased). I agree that Netgear
should rename "Server IP" to "LAN IP" to avoid confusion - I had noticed
this with my Netgear router too. Also, with port forwarding you should
be sure to fix the IP address against MAC address so that the LAN
address you specify in port forwarding remains valid in the future.
