I had the exact same problem, where as both contribute and dreamweaver ftp
connections just stopped working both externally and to our intranet. However I
could use ftp through the command line and internet explorer. I downloaded the
ftpchecker from the Macromedia Site and filezilla and it still wouldn't work.

I disabled the Anti-virus processes and tried again. Worked!! Turned out that
the new Anti-virus works in similar way to a firewall where certain
applications need approval to use ftp.

Just disabled my Norten AV 2003 and it works fine.

That sux. Interoperability my ass.

Is MM/Adobe working on a fix for this?

It's not MM/Adobe's problem. It's Norton's problem. Ask them.

Perhaps the real problem, though, is simply how you have Norton configured
to act as a firewall?

Sorry, Norten is not my firewall. Just AV.

I'm using passive ftp now as well. That helped also, since just disableing AV
was intermittent correction.

My firewall is my dsl router- 2wire- will take a look at it.

Ran into a very similar problem today under Macromedia Dreamweaver MX - had
just rebuilt the system and upon re-setting up the site with _exactly_ the same
settings as before, could see the remote file list but not get any files.
Trying to get a file resulted in "FTP error" and no information in the FTP log.

Turns out the user did not have write permissions to the local copy of the
site on her computer, so it could connect to the server, try to get the file,
but not finish the get by writing it to the workstation.

Hope that helps someone.

Hi,

Today I just started using DW 8, after several years of successfull use of DW
3. Unfortunately I experienced since the beginning the same "ftp error" when I
try to connect or test the connection.

I use sftp to connect.

I checked/unchecked all the boxes I found with no success.
I can connect to the same site using CoreFTP
I can connect to another site using the same DW8 on the same computer (running
XP).
I switched off the firewall (Zonealarm) on the client.
I switched off the firewall on the server (suse 9.2, Apache 2.x).
My Windows firewall is always off.

I'm orrified because reading in this forum I understood this is an issue with
Dreamweaver that has never been seriously afforded by Macromedia.

I just wrote to the Macromedia assistance and hope to receive an answer but I
would like to know if there are news on this issue. If you have any news please
let me know

Cheers
