An FTP error occurred - Cannot make connection to host

I am using DW4, and am not really sure where everything is yet. How do I find the advanced section?

I also have this problem. It happened suddenly as well. I troubleshot with my
hosting company, mac, and my dsl company and they led me back to dreamweaver.
i have tried to impliment all of the suggestions that have been discussed here
and more - passive ftp being checked, changing the format of the ftp host,
making sure port 21 isn't blocked and nothing works. i don't know about
everybody else but my error message is bouncing back immediately. it's not
even trying for all that long to connect. any other suggestions. i'm losing
my mind, too.

Do you have FTP enabled? (SYstem Preferences - Network)

Do you mean the FTP proxy in Network? Or the FTP acess in sharing?

I messed around with those, but no can do. by the way -- thanks for responding mick, i appreciate it.

i am able to access the ftp site through my browser, but not through dreamweaver. so i figure that ftp must be enabled by the system.

I upgraded from V4 to MX 2004. Dreamweaver automatically set up my Sites.
However, I can not connect to the sites with MX (FTP problems, same as
described in this thread). I can still connect with V4. No changes have been
made. I have tried everything from this thread, but no luck...

Has anybody come up with a solution to this problem. I have the same problem on
both Windows and my Mac. I have tried all the suggestions in this thread to no
avial. I do occasionally get a connection, but then I get the syncronization
error message about can't determine the time on the remote server. The other
thing is that since I live in Africa I can't get on the phone to support...
anyway it seems that the support suggestions haven't helped people much anyway.
Any new solutions - apart from learning Go Live or some other new software?

I got the same error today for the first time and after much frustration
realised that I was connected to another computer via a vpn. As soon as I
disconnected the vpn connection the dw ftp worked again. I'd be surpised if
this was the solution for everyone but it could be related somehow. Good luck.

I had a problem where I could not upload to the server. with a response such
as "cannot find the server" "cannot connect to the server" ( port 21 was being
blocked) etc
I do not have Norton Firewall only windows firewall

I have Norton Anti Virus 2005 installed on my computer and it turns out that
we had to turn off (disable) the anti worm detection. No matter what we did
with Norton , such as configuring exception rules etc we could not get access
to the web server it would not connect us and kept blocking the connection.
As soon as we disabled the internet worm detection it worked like a dream and
connected straight away. ( I had the computer tecnician help me with this).
We discovered we could not enable the Norton internet worm detection and have
left it off.
My tech decided that as I have windows Spy ware it should pick up any worms
.. Still running smoothly!
