Hello all,

I, too, have suddenly had this problem, and have been pulling my hair out
trying to determine a solution before using one of my "complementary"
tech-service incident calls to get help over the telephone. I threw in the
cards and made the call. Hopefully what you read next will save you from
having to use yor "complementary" call.

I just got off the phone with Macromedia tech support, and was able to come to
a solution to this problem. My incident number was #7973223, if you should
need to reference the call.

The Fix:

In the Remote Info area of my site definition, I had the following in the FTP
host dialogue:

ftp://ftp.mydomain.org/

The tech team member suggested removing the "ftp://" and the final "/" from
the FTP host information:

ftp.mydomain.org

Testing the connection using the "test" button proved that his suggestion had
worked.

Evidently, Dreamweaver MX's FTP client does not process the "ftp://" and "/"
very well. Other FTP clients are able to handle those parts of the FTP
address, but not Dreamweaver MX.

No explanation was offered as to the sudden occurrence of this issue with
Dreamweaver MX.

Good luck to you all,
River

Murray,

I do not see this suggestion posted anywhere in this thread. Now that it is, I hope it will be of benefit to other users.

Perhaps not in this thread but in hundreds of others. It's actually quite a
common mistake.

However, it's always a rush to solve things like this for yourself, and I am
happy that you have done so. Posting the solution here may well help
others, but only if they search before they post, doncha know? ;-)

Hello,

I'm having the same problem described by Joe - I get a 530 login error when
trying to establish a ftp connection. I've read through the responses in this
discussion and have double checked my settings:
- ftp host correctly identified with ftp.sitename.bc.ca
- passive ftp box checked
- login name and password filled out properly

I'm wondering if the length of the password makes a difference - the password
that I was given is over 40 characters long. Apparently the previous webmaster
had no difficulties uploading files using Windsock.

I'm using Dreamweaver MX on a Mac running OS X.3.5. Incidently, I have no
difficulty updating my .Mac web sites using the Local/Network configuration.

Hope you can help,

Dave

Hello folks,

How does that story go - if the car doesn't work check to see if it has any
gas in it. I emailed my contact and she informed me that she had given me the
wrong password. Using the new password I haven't had any problems and am in the
process of downloading the site to my computer.

Cheers,

Dave

Hello,
I am having such a terrible time with DW. I am trying to upload my files to
my site, but of course I keep getting the same message:An FTP error occurred -
Cannot make connection to host. I have been online chatting with tech support
with my hosting provider. They have tried everything: having me disable
firewalls, security features, changing host names. They eventually said it
looked like the 21st port was blocked, so I went in and turned that on. DW is
not blocked from using the internet on my computer, that is fine. I tried
using the suggestion posted here about getting rid of the ftp//:, or whatever.
NOTHING IS WORKING. I am so frustrated and I am new to all of this, so I don't
know what to do to fix it. What should I try next? I keep getting different
responses from my hosting tech support about which host name and directory name
to put in on the remote information. I have been trying with the following:
www.mysite.com - ftp host
www.mysite.com - directory

HELP!!!
Thanks!
Meak32

Make your Remote site definition like this -

FTP host: www.domain.com
Host directory: <blank>

Enter the login information and click Test. What happens?

The same thing happened. Although, I must admit, I do not know where the
"test" option is. I just define my site, from there I get to the remote
information panel and fill in the spaces. How do I actually test without
pushing the connect to host button? So sorry, I am so new to this.

Make sure you are on the Advanced tab of the Remote site definition. There
should be a Test button there.
