Default Flickering Show/Hide Behavior using OnMouseOver - 07-28-2004 , 01:06 AM

I have a layer that I want to "show" when the mouse is over an image map
(OnMouseOver) and then "hide" when I move the mouse out (OnMouseOut). Using
IE, when I place the mouse over the image map the layer flickers on and off
very very badly. Using Mozilla the performance is a little better, but nothing
even approaching acceptable. It is difficult, even taking your hand off the
mouse and leaving it still, to get the layer to stay shown. I've never noticed
having this problem using anyone else's site.

I don't understand why the performance would be even a little bit different
between browsers, but maybe that's because I don't understand what's going on.

The behavior can be observed (if it happens for you) at www.meblake.com,
select portfolio. I have only attach the behavior to four image maps so far,
but they shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Does anyone know why this is happening? What can be done to fix this?

Did anyone not experience this performance?

It sounds a little odd, but could this be happening to me because I have a
cordless mouse?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael

Imagine this -

1. I place an image in a layer and hide the layer.
2. Directly under the layer, I place a link with two show-hide layer
behaviors applied to it: one to show the hidden layer onmouseover, and the
other to hide the hidden layer onmouseout.

If I mouse over the link, the layer will show. When it shows, the link is
masked. The browser interprets this as a mouseout event and hides the layer.
But the mouse hasn't moved, so the link's behavior is triggered again
onmouseover, which again masks the link and triggers a mouseout event.
Guess what - it flickers.

Could that be your problem? 8)

I wrote a long reply and pressed reply and I don't know what happened to it. I
don't see it posted. There are several things about this forum that are not
very graceful.

In short, you are totally right.

What I'm going to try is moving the OnClick and OnMouseOut behaviors to an
image map on the turned on layer.

Do you know of any other possible fixes?

Thanks for your attention, I hope you get to see this. I hesitate to press
the same "Reply to Topic" button again, but I can't see any other reasonable
options.

It worked perfectly. I have a lot of image maps to build but I hope to have it out on the internet by morning. Please visit.

Thanks for your companionship.

That's true, but the NNTP access via news://forums.macromedia.com is
