In firworks, click on one of your slices and check out the "optimze" panal.
Is it set for GIF with "alpha transparency" ? It sounds like you are
exportning everything as a jpg (which doesn't support transprency) or as a
non-transparent gif. (FYI, png files also support transprency but microsoft
can't seem to get their act together and support png files in IE)
