Default files with tar gz - 01-03-2006 , 07:36 PM

The site downloads from Frontpage no problem. Unfortunately Dw doesnt recognise
the site downloaded with FP extensions In dreamweaver it is another story . It
open a couple of insignificant file but will not open the file which contains
the web content with a file extension tar gz. Has anyone else experienced
this..any ideas?

I can not believe how difficult it is just to get this program functional. No
support until you buy but who would buy a program that wont even do basic
functions. None of the tutorials cover this and I have found nothing in the
knowlege base to help.

Of course I feel terrible because I suggested our organization go with this as
the adverts for contribute and dreamweaver make it look seamless but I know if
I can not even do the basics without serious tech support it will be too
difficult for the other users.

How or why would DreamWeaver know to open a tar gz file? DreamWeaver works with
html and related files, not zipped and archived files. You need to untar the
file contents first. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your problem, but it's not
making sense.

Can you explain the problem a bit more clearly?

Like bregent, I'm having trouble understanding your difficulty.

DW is a HTML editor.

tar.gz files are compressed files (similar to zip files). DW will not open
them. It's not designed to.
You untar the file then DW can work with what's inside it.

No software manufacturer will support the software until you make a
purchase. That's standard commercial practice which seems reasonable to me.

What basic functions are you struggling with?

Hi,
The tar gz file is the way it came down from the server. In Front page it just
came down like a web page with files...no tar GZ file. I have on idea how to
unzip this tried winzip but it said the file lacked executive function...I
tried to bring them down into a local folder three times with the same results.
Dreamweaver connects with the server asks me If I want the whole site I click
yes etc

I can do the ftp in Dreamweaver, it brings all the files. I can access them,
change them and upload them but not preview them in my browser or save them to
my computer. I went to knowlege base articles and it said to check make
temporary file to preview in file which I did but it didnt change anything. I
thought if I edited in designer view that should be safe but even though I only
edited text and chose to bring down and save dependent files the images went
missing in the upload. I then went back to Frontpage loaded a backup file.

So basically even though I went through the tutorials I can not save a copy of
the site to my hard drive as I get the targz file where all the info is located
and I and Dreamweaver can not open it So I cant play with the program until I
get it right without wrecking the site; The tutorials deal with creating a
basic site...unfortunately I need to look after the site that is already up

I cant preview so that I can check my work as all paths to preview lead to
error message no dns server etc

I am sure it is something simple and basic as all I did was set up the ftp.
Dreamweaver will also not read files brought down by Frontpage..I tried that too

Thanks If I can get by this I am sure I can work it out

Well, I'm still confused about this part. How did the tar.gz come down from
the server? Which application did you use to download it? You mention below
that you can ftp successfully and it brings in all the files, so it's
obviously not coming from there. My guess is that there are some tar files
on your server and you are downloading them.

You can't save a file? What happens when you try?

It sure sounds like you have not defined your site properly. Tell us what
you have filled in for the Local and Remote info tabs (minus the username
and password) in your site definition.

I believe the tar GZ file is a logfile. Many site hosts automatically
convert each week or month's log like that to compress it. This could be
happening because FP knows not to download it while DW is downloading every
file it sees.

The site is in the targz file and that is the way it comes form the server. I
used Dreamweaver to download with ftp

Local and remote info as follows
Here is my server config
name testsif
Access type FTP
FTP Host ftp.spinalinjuryfoundation.org
Host directory /http
login Spinalin
Password 396tenth
checked passive ftp and use firewall
URL prefix http://localhost/spinalinjuryfoundation.org/

Under firewall settings/preview in browser I have a check in preview using
temporary file as the forum thought this might fix things but it didnt. Do you
have where to store images filled in?

login

When I try to get a local site
Unnamed Site 1
http http://spinalinjuryfoundation.org
editing files: no server technology
part three: edit on local machine
where to store files: C:\Documents and Settings\Dr Amy\My Documents\Unnamed
Site 1\
How to connect: local/network
where on folder to store: C:\Documents and Settings\Dr Amy\My Documents\test2\
(this file shows 28 megs the size of the site and is where the targz file is.
The other files are measured in kilobytes and there are seven of them
local and remote files show the same content

I am sure it is in these settings somewhere but where thanks!

I think you're mixing up two different issues. The problem seems to be in
the files you're downloading. First, how did the entire set get into a
tar.gz file? That shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Try this:

- Set up a new site on your computer using DW site definition.

- In the remote settings, use your settings but leave "Host directory"
blank.

- Now GET all the files.

What do you get?

Check this tutorial (and the one linked about defining your site) and see if
it helps:

Are you sure that /http is the correct host directory? Have you verified
this with your host?
