I followed the steps outlined in Dreamweaver Help for making changes to the Behaviour and updating the library item. |
|
I'm using Dreamweaver MX. I have a library item that contains an image with the Kaos Random Links Behaviour attached to it. But when Dreamweaver comes to update the library item it crashes completely and constantly. I've only created two pages at the moment. I wanted to make sure everything was working before going further. It seems using a library item is not the way to go. Would making a template be a better bet? I've heard mention of SSI but don't know anything about this (this isn't my main job). Is Dreamweaver MX2004 any better at handling templates and library items? I'd like to be able to update the random links behaviour from time to time and have the changes made site wide. Is it possible to do this? Thanks, Chris (Hunt) |

What are these steps? Where did you find them? In general, once you make a Library item, you cannot successfully edit behaviors applied to elements. This is because a proper Library item has no head> or <body> tags.... |

Thanks for repling. Here are the steps I followed, from the Dreamweaver MX Help file: -------------------------- To edit a behavior in a library item: 1. Open a document that contains the library item. Note the name of the library item, as well as the exact tags it contains. You’ll need this information in steps 8 and 9. 2. Select the library item and click Detach from Original in the Property inspector. 3. Select the element that has the behavior attached to it. 4. Choose Window > Behaviors to open the Behaviors panel. In the Behaviors panel, double-click the action you want to change. 5. In the dialog box that appears, make the necessary changes and click OK. 6. Choose Window > Library to open the Library category of the Assets panel. 7. Make sure you have recorded the exact name of the original library item; then select the original library item, and delete it by clicking the Delete button in the Assets panel. 8. In the Document window, select all of the elements that make up the library item. Be careful to select exactly the same elements that were in the original library item. 9. In the Assets panel, click the New Library Item button, and give the new item the same name as the item you deleted in step 7. Be sure to use exactly the same spelling and capitalization. 10. To update the library item in your site’s other documents, choose Modify > Library > Update Pages. 11. In the Update Pages dialog box, in the Look in pop-up menu, select Files That Use. 12. In the adjacent pop-up menu, choose the name of the library item you just created. 13. In the Update option, make sure Library Items is selected, and then click Start. 14. When the updates are complete, click Close to exit the Update Pages dialog box. -------------------------- If there's another way without using a library item, that's fine. I want the graphic on every page and I want to be able to update the random links periodically. Amazingly enough, those steps should work. Editing a Library item's behaviors is an impractical and difficult thing. Are you sure you completed those steps properly? Have you considered using a Template or a server-side include? -- Murray --- ICQ 71997575 Team Macromedia Volunteer for Dreamweaver (If you *MUST* email me, don't LAUGH when you do so!) |

I created a header and two boxes but I can't make the appear of equal length. |

I'm almost certain I got the right steps. It did work once or twice but crashed more often than not. I've given up on the library idea. What I want to do I feel should be easy but is eluding me. I wanted to create a fixed width centred box with a header and footer and two boxes, one a sidebar for navigation and the other on the right for content. Then I could make the left box an uneditable region to contain the menu. I found the link you posted to roast-horse.com useful and I created a header and two boxes but I can't make the appear of equal length. More pointers would be really appreciated. If you are crashing with Library items, then something is wrong with your operating environment. You can ignore that, but it will come back to bite you. You can do what you want using Library items, Templates, or server-side includes. A bit of reading in DW's F1 help would be a good way to start on these. As for using a table, I'd prefer to use CSS. Isn't CSS the way it should be done? |
|
I think that uses a layer and I thought a layer shouldn't be placed in a table - or am I getting mixed up with frames? |

I recently used Windows update so I wonder if one of Microsoft's security patches has given Dreamweaver a nasty side effect. As for using a table, I'd prefer to use CSS. Isn't CSS the way it should be done? I'm planning to use the PVII swapclass menu.
