Default FAO Osgood - 11-01-2004 , 05:09 AM

Just letting you know I received my books today WOW
The CF book - 1500 pages!! No wonder Angela said you can't put it under
your pillow to soak in the knowledge <lol>

Now I'm stuck with which php book to start with.
After browsing through them I'm going with the Rachel andrews / David Powers
book first because it related to DW.

The other (PHP and MySQL - Larry Ullman) looks very good too - lots more
projects to get your teeth into, but I'll start by working via DW and
hopefully learn via the code view as I go :-) Just wished there were
more hours in the day!!

I take up quite a few of those already ...
maybe I can try and go without sleep for the next month - and hopefully I
will end up being a walking / talking php / cf guru -

No such luck for me I bet though - I'd end up looking / acting like a
zombie - or at least more than I do already !!

:-)

1500 pages!! lol. Humm sounds as though there is quite a lot to learn.
CF I think is a bit of a nightmare to set up on the Mac so I could well
be giving that a miss I think.

A book that size, should you get frustrated, may come in handy for guy
fawkes night (a ritual burning) which is only a few days away here.
Certainly keep the flames fueled for a bit, lol

Yeah, think this is the book I'm definately going to get. I'll give it a
whirl and see what comes out the other end. At least I know where David
is when I get stuck, lol

Projects is good. I think if you can go through something, step by step,
you tend to learn a lot more and can then use that knowledge to
customise to your own requirements.

Im at the stage of getting variables which are passed by a form and
having them printed on the page. I got lost when they started to talk
'if', 'else', 'array' and I had to remember which to bracket and which
not to. Kind of all suddenly went blank, lol.

Oh well good reading. Let me know how you get on

Ooops just posted this under the previous thread.

Hi Nadia,

Im just looking at Davids site and cant find this listed? Did you find
it somewhere else or did someone recommend it?

Another point is mysql. Are you going to be using 'phpmyadmin' as the
graphical interface to build the data base?

I know that some books take you through how to write it directly,
without using a graphical interface. However although I think this would
be good to know, in the long term, its not something which I'm going to
major on.

I've been using 'phpmyadmin' for some time to create simple databases
and I'm thinking why take onboard extra when there is really no need.

Osgood: (reposting to keep it all under one thread - in case anyone else is
following )

No it was recommended on another list. Going through the TOC: these are the
projects they walk you through: Content Management; User registration;
E-Commerce;

http://tinyurl.com/4xrdu
That's takes you via my aff link at Amazon US, but you probably want to go
via UK - just copy the ISBN and you should find it....

Yes ! most definitely.
The above book uses mysql monitor from my quick browse of the book, but says
you can use myphpadmin....
whereas Davids' book steps you through myphpadmin.

Answered above. Good to learn both ways I guess - but tiny steps at a time

Well, you are definitely ahead of my. My very first attempt to check out a
database when I first installed all this stuff.. I did a 'dump' didn't I -
you can guess what happened lol
