Default extremely slow rollovers - 08-24-2004 , 04:39 PM

For some reason these roll overs are going very very slow. I thought that the preload images option corrects this. here is my site: http://rf.cubeddesign.com/splash5.htm

It's because those images are huge. Total page size (without the rollover
images) is 81991 bytes; the two rollovers add 19 + 27, or another 46K,
making your total page weight 126K, which will take a dialup user 30
seconds to download. It will take a dialup user 20 seconds just to load
the page, before the rollover images start to load. Even on my cable
connection it was slow.

<hint>I'm not going to pick which browser I have anyway; I'm just going to
go elsewhere</hint>

He's saying that you have to be careful about how long it takes pages to
load. People have a short attention span online and if it takes too long,
unless they REALLY want to see your page, it's all too easy for them to
**click** and go somewhere else.

I think it is because you have a splash page that asks which browser the
user is using. If you must ask, use a sniffer and just load the site that
needs to be loaded, or just create one site that is all-browser friendly.

I think Joe was also being critical of the concept of asking a visitor to
pick what browser he is using. Joe is right. Design your page to work with
all major browsers and don't worry about which is being used.

Keep in mind that:

- not everyone knows WHICH browser they are using
- an extra splash page like this just gets in the way of the viewer getting
to your site
- most folks don't CARE which browser they are using...they just want to
get to the site
- best practices would suggest that you make a site that is browser
agnostic if at all possible.

Exactly. I teach 'Introduction to the Internet'; it's amazing how many
people equate opening Internet Explorer with 'starting the internet'.

I have clients who have been online for a number of years and still have no
concept of "the Internet," how that differs from their ISP, how that's
different than their site host, and most of all, how they can possibly get
their email if they're in a remote location and haven't logged on by
clicking the "Connect to AOL" button on their computer.

I think for most people.......Internet = Magic
