Default Editing Dreamweaver or Golive sites without the Program - 03-11-2009 , 12:52 PM

Hey Folks,

I'm new to Web Authoring Software although I've done some website work using
HTML / XHTML and so forth.. My question is, if you don't have Dreamweaver or
Golive or any other Web Authoring Software, can one still edit, make changes,
updates, to these websites without them?

I've been asked to do some flash work and to integrate the work but this site
looks to have been rendered in GoLive due to the following tag <csscriptdict>
and what I've found on several Google searches, and I fear that whatever work I
do I may not be able to integrate without GoLive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Peace,

Yes, but at risk of damaging some of the controls of the site.

The most likely occurrence of this would be if the site has been built using
DW/GL templates. Child pages of these templates can only be edited in
certain specified regions (called 'editable regions'). If you would edit
content that is NOT in an editable region, then your edits would be removed
when that page is next updated from within DW/GL.

I'd say that unless you are very comfortable with a) (X)HTML and CSS, and b)
with how DW/GL templates work, you are taking a big chance by making any
changes outside of these applications.

You may, of course, make any "simple" changes with any text editor... since HTML is nothing but a text file with browser commands

If you don't know the commands... you need a helper program

Murray "ACE"

Sorry for the late reply to your post, my son had the flu then I did, not
fun...

So yes, the site was built using templates and I am comfortable with (X)HTML
and CSS but not with how DW/GL templates work.

That said, however, I can edit the site locally or create a temp folder server
side and test the changes before going live so I'm not concerned with making
changes.

Can you briefly explain what an edible region would look like? What kind of
CODE/TAG would they be wrapped in that would aid me in looking for them?

Any help / suggestions that could help me, would be great.

Peace,

John T Smith

Sorry for the late reply to your post as well, as you may have read my
previous post the flu is not fun...

Yeah, I hand code all my stuff and I?ve become use to it but I need to
catch-up with the times even if it?s just so I can identify and work with it.

What did you mean by a "helper program"?

Any help / suggestions that could help me would be great.

What are the "editable regions" you mentioned, and where would they be found?
Within DW/GL codes that are within the HTML code?

In an external folder referenced by DW/GL code within the HTML code?

I'm comfortable with (X)HTML and CSS however not familiar with DW/GL templates
at all, ergo my question. My thought is to either download the ftp content to
my HD or create a temp folder within the ftp where I can do my edits before
going live; however, without the above question being addressed I can't proceed.
