Default DW8 trial killed my DW4 - 11-01-2005 , 09:34 AM

I installed the trial in a separate directory. Now when I want to edit a page
in DW4 it won't even start. Windows 2000 just gives me a message
"Dreamweaver.exe generated errors and will will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program."
Of course a restart doesn't help- it just pops the same message. I don't want
to uninstall the trial yet, because my boss will buy it if I can show him that
it will make the page look better and be easier to manage. Anyone know how to
make the DW4 work again?

Installing DW8 would have no effect on your existing DW4 installation. They
share no common files other than the HTML files in your sites.

it is probably the .mno notes file format that's crashing dw4.

See this technote-
http://www.macromedia.com/support/contribute/ts/documents/dw4_crash.htm
The person using the older dw version will need to clear the .mno design
notes from the Local Site Folder, and set dw4 so it doesn't share .mno
design notes. The design note format from 2004 and dw8 will crash dw4.

Right - I keep forgetting about them. Good catch, Alan....

DW8 doesn't actual share files but it does write files to your site. So
if you open a site in DW8 and then work on a template or images or
anything that would write back to the site hidden files - that site
might crash when later opened in DW4. It's a bug in the sense that it
could have been prevented, but no one testing probably used DW4 or DW3
;-)

Right. The guaranteed culprit is the mno file....

Thanks everybody. Deleting the _Notes folder did the trick.
Last time I had DW4 on, I switched to the copy of the site. Then I installed
the DW8 demo and worked on some pages in the same directory . When I started
DW4, it by default went to the copy of the site with new notes. That's what
crashed it.
I will only work on a copy of the site using the DW8 demo and on the original
using DW4.

This is a bit off topic, but I expected a little more intuitive interface for
CSS. It's the same old form as in the DW4 only with improved preview. Is there
something I'm still missing? The expanded CSS features of the DW8 are touted as
a big selling point in the presentations.

I think you will have to work with it a bit to really appreciate the
difference. I like the fact that I can see ONLY those rules that apply to
the current selection in detail. I like the fact that I can see the cascade
of those rules with the specificities for each, or the details of the styles
from ALL the rules. I like the fact that I can see ALL the rules or only
those that apply. I like the fact that I can edit the rules from the panel
itself without invoking the CSS editor. I like the fact that I can select
the various media types to display in Design view. It goes on and on....
