Default DW MX 2004: ok to get rid of old version? - 06-25-2004 , 09:39 AM

Just a quickie for any Macroserfs on this board. I've just installed DW MX
2004, and very nice it is too - it actually renders my CSS-P layouts
moderately well, a vast improvement on MX. My Q is: can I now safely
uninstall my old copy of DW MX without danger of losing all my sites,
prefs, and whatnot?

A supplementary Q if anyone's got the patience: is it possible to back up
sites, prefs, and whatnot? I don't know where all this info is stored,
although I suspect it's in the Registry in which case the answer would be
'no, unless you back up the whole Registry'.

TIA.

Cheers

You can back-up site definition settings in DWMX, but it only backs up
one site at a time. This is the "Export" button you see when setting up
a site.

Alternatively, you can download one of these.

2004 should have imported all of your site defs and such, so it should be
safe to uninstall v6.x.

If you're on Windows, then the sites are indeed in the registry, but there
are a couple of ways to get them out of there. DMX and DMX2004 both have a
site export feature in the site definitions section. Simply click on the
site and click the Export button. It wil create an XML file with all your
site details within it. There is also a registry tool floating about that
will export all the site settings into a single registry export file. But I
can't remember where that one is off the top of my head. Perhaps a quick
Google search will reveal that one.

Best regards,
Chris

Many thanks, Chris and Linda, for such quick replies - useful and much
appreciated. I'll de-install MX shortly, and try those tools you suggested,
Linda.

Cheers

I did this ok the other day and it didn't affect the MX 2004 installation,
which was good. A strange consequence was that the de-install removed all
my Mozilla settings and prefs, because when I ran Mozilla just after the
de-install everything had gone back to defaults and I had to re-do a bunch
of prefs, including proxy configs. Strange, though no big deal.

BTW, nice email address, Chris

Thanks :-) Don't know if it does any good but it makes me feel better.

Best regards,
Chris
