Default DW MX 2004 Mac Os X 10.3 SPEED? - 11-02-2004 , 04:34 PM

Hi, I have been a user of Dreamweaver MX for years and I'd like to use MX
2004. I have bought it but it still remains unused sitting in my applications
folder after a year of inactivity. I have recently started using MX 2004 on my
PC (XP Pro, AMD 2200+) and it storms through my work! mostly my work involves
ASP/VBscript. On my Mac (OS 10.3.5, 1Ghz Powerbook G4) it just crawls, I've
tried turning off as many visual elements as possible but the scroll speed is
painful and working is just too slow. MX still offers much better speed but i'm
getting more and more used to features I've been using on my windows machine
and would love to use my Mac (obviously) so I was wondering if anyone has any
words of wisdom in speeding MX 2004 up. I have obviously upgraded to 7.0.1
Any help?

Unfortunately there hasn't been a 'quick' mac version probably since version 4.
I have MX running on my Powerbook (550 mhz, 512 ram) and that runs smoothly,
except when I type fast (which usually means I have to wait for text to appear
after I type it). But other than that it is fine. I tried MX 2004 and it's
horrible on a Mac. All the patches fix Windows problems but they don't make
the program perform any better on a Mac. I am waiting for the next MX release
before I upgrade with Macromedia again because they don't seem to fix anything
in the following update, it seems to take 2 updates.

Sorry to disagree! Screen estate is far superior to windows and the speed is
fine. G4 733MHz PowerPC 384 MB OS 10.3.5 Running along side: Text Edit

After seeing many comments about MX 2004's speed issues on Macs, I was hesitant
to upgrade from MX.

However after watching a bunch of tutorial videos about how to use MX 2004, I
could not resist.

I find it just about as fast as MX. Faster in some ways.

I think an often overlooked issue is RAM. ANY Mac using OS X works a LOT better
with more RAM (duh). The sweet spot is 768. You will see a big difference in
everything when you get to that stage, and a bit more with 1 GB.

I use DMX 2004 on my 1.2 GHz G4/Panther, and it's a little slower than on my
1.2 GHz P4.

But so much of this is subjective, and depends heavily on your workflow,
it's really hard to say.

Is it just me or is Dreamweaver MX 2004 still not truly Mac OS X native? If
you right click on the dreamweaver icon and then click 'show package contents'
then open Contents/MacOS and get info for the dreamweaver app it shows in the
get info dialog the option to start up in classic mode? It doesn't actually
get the app to open in classic (it just started then stopped for me) but I
would associate this option to an app that wasn't fully converted to os x? I'm
probably clutching at straws but i'm trying to find out why there is such a
massive performance difference between my ?210 (inc VAT) Windows PC and my
?1700 (inc VAT a year ago) Mac PB G4. Or is this speed hit on the Mac down to
Macromedia not being bothered to finish mac software over the larger windows
market?

Ask Macromedia, I guess....

I don't know, and I don't really care! 8)

Unfortunately I would have to agree with you tdream. They are not putting the
effort into the Mac portion of their business. As you probably have noticed
there are not many threads anymore about the speed of the application on
Windows, but the Mac issues persist and they never seem to get fixed.
Realistically at this point speed should not be an issue, and they should have
been working on ways to utilize the new G5 processors. But it seems like they
are way behind where they should be. I guess though, regardless of whether
they fix this problem I will end up using DW just because it is still, minus
the horrible performance, the best option out there, mac or windows. The only
thing I find disappointing is that DW is not the only program affected by this
plague, and Adobe stopped Livemotion production last year which eliminated a
possible alternative for Flash at least. Who knows, maybe we just need to
start a petition here to let Macromedia know just how many Mac users they
really have and that we need these problems fixed.

It is a real pitty that the Mac platform has suffered because of lack of
development of Macromedia's software (kind of ironic for a web development
company). When will Macromedia be releasing a new version of Dreamweaver?
anyone know? soon I hope! In the meantime I will be looking closely at the
newly developing app from Microsoft. Visual Web Developer 2005 is looking
pretty solid (Beta currently and freely available) and a lot cheaper option for
web developers although only a Windows option at the minute.
