Default DW has encountered a fatal exception - 07-16-2004 , 02:30 PM

Hello,

My Dreamweaver came with the Macromedia MX web suite. I just installed
Dreamweaver MX, but it won't run. it shows the splash screen with the green "d"
on it, "thinks" with the hour glass mouse for about 5 minutes, then gives an
error box: "Dreamweaver has encountered a fatal exception. Dreamweaver will now
terminate." I click OK and DW quits.

I have read on Google about others who had this problem when opening files. I
don't even get that far. No solution was given and I wonder if there's any
patches or fixes or workarounds for this? I can't even get in to the program.

Thanks.

There should be a 6.1 update that you should get from Macromedia. I don't
know if this will help but it might.
Try making sure no other programs are running when you launch Dreamweaver.

Not much help but good luck.

Diagnosing such problems is very hard without complete information about
your computer and its operating environment. Can you please tell me -

0. What is your version of Dreamweaver? And when you right click on the DW
executable (dreamweaver.exe), then select Properties > Version, what is the
version number you see in the properties panel?
1. What is your OS?
2. What is your AntiVirus?
3. Is your AntiVirus doing realtime protection?
4. What is your Firewall?
5. What other background programs are running?
6. What Dreamweaver extensions do you have installed?
7. Are you *running* DMX from a network shared drive?
8. Where are your 'local' files? Are they on a network shared drive?
9. Have you ever been able to run DMX or is this a recent failure?
10. Does this only seem to happen with certain files/sites?
11. Does recreating the site cache (SITE | Recreate Site Cache) help?
12. Are you using *any* OS-improving utilities like "TweakUI" for example?
13. Are you logging on as an ADMINISTRATOR, or do you have admin
privileges?

It's Dreamweaver MX from Studio MX box. The version says 6.1.

1. What is your OS?
I'm emulating Windows ME but I tried XP also. Screen resolution is set to
1024x768.

2. What is your AntiVirus?
I don't have a Antivirus software installed.

3. Is your AntiVirus doing realtime protection?
N/A

4. What is your Firewall?
We use a corporate firewall and antivirus, for the network. there isn't a
separate one on my computer.

5. What other background programs are running?
Sometimes I'll have my email program open and a console window. I don't
believe I'm taxing the system resources.

6. What Dreamweaver extensions do you have installed?
Sorry, I'm a dreamweaver idiot. I didn't explicitly install anything other
than Dreamweaver from the Studio MX CD. I don't think I have any extensions.

7. Are you *running* DMX from a network shared drive?
Dreamweaver is on a hard disk partition that is local to the machine, but it's
a shared drive on the network, if that is what you're asking? as in others can
access it.

8. Where are your 'local' files? Are they on a network shared drive?
Same answer as above...

9. Have you ever been able to run DMX or is this a recent failure?
I just installed it, it hasn't been able to run yet. Should I try to
re-install it?

10. Does this only seem to happen with certain files/sites?
It happens when I try to run Dreamweaver with the Dreamweaver.exe file. I
don't get to try to open anything with it.

11. Does recreating the site cache (SITE | Recreate Site Cache) help?
If you talking about the Site menu, I don't have any menus. I don't get into
the software at all.

12. Are you using *any* OS-improving utilities like "TweakUI" for example?
Dreamweaver is the first software I installed on my emulator. But solitaire
and notepad run just fine... :-) I don't have any utilities in there, it's just
a bare-bones Windows installation.

13. Are you logging on as an ADMINISTRATOR, or do you have admin privileges?
No, i log on as a user, but the file system is FAT32, so I think the
privileges are the same for all users? Windows ME? I can log on as the
administrator and try that.

Thank you for your assistance!!!!

Emulating? What is your REAL operating system?

Not even a cut and paste. It's a keyboard macro. Ctrl-right click, find
the macro in the list. Click and bada bing, bada boom! I have about 100 of
them.

I had a similar problem with DW giving Fatal Exception error every
time I tried to run it. In my case, it was after months of using it
without errors(under Win XP Pro). I tried various suggestions with no
luck, then decided to clean up the disks a defrag them. Since I did
this, I've had no more problems with DW. Worth giving it a try.

Good luck!
