Default dropdown menu - Still here Murray? - 11-03-2005 , 05:13 PM

Seems like every time I follow this tutorial I get different results.
Anyway, I can't figure out why in IE I can't mouse over the sub menu without
the menucloser closing it first. It works fine in Firefox.

What am I missing or what's hanging me up?

Here's a clue. GIve your closer layer a background color - then you can see
where it is and when it's being shown. Also, you don't want to un-hide the
closer layer until you actually make it into the submenus.

isn't the closer menu supposed to encompass the whole menu?

I took the 'un-hiding' of the closer menu out before it got to the submenus,
but now it won't close anything...is the positioning wrong?

I checked out that auto_hide tutorial link you often post. The Auto layers
tutorial I use doesn't use the auto hide, it uses the menu close...Anyway,
in this link, it says to set the three trigger buttons and then add the auto
hide behavior. I installed the auto hide extension but when I selected
'body' it wouldn't let me access the auto hide UI.

What's the best method to use? Or is there a simple solution to why my close
menu isn't functioning?

Dan:

You are missing something fundamental in the concept.

The closer layer is hidden UNTIL any of the links in the submenu are moused
over. Then it's shown, so that when you mouse off the links in the submenu,
both the closer layer and the submenu layers are hidden. You have none of
that interactivity in your code (which I have modified slightly to move the
mouseover from the <img> tag to a null link wrapping it) -

<div id="Articles" ><a href="#"
onMouseOver="P7_autoLayers('Articles_Sub')">Articl es</a></div>
<div id="Classifieds" ><a href="#"
onMouseOver="P7_autoLayers('Classifieds_Sub')">Cla ssified Ads</a></div>
<div id="PetSitter" ><a href="#"
onMouseOver="P7_autoLayers('PetSitter_Sub')">Find a Pet Sitter</a> </div>
<div id="Articles_Sub"><a href="#">articles 1</a> <a href="#">articles 2</a>
<a href="#">articles 3</a> </div>
<div id="Classifieds_Sub"><a href="#">Classifeds 1</a> <a
href="#">classifieds 2</a> <a href="#">classifieds 3</a></div>
<div id="PetSitter_Sub"><a href="#">PS1 PS2 PS3 PS4</a></div>
<div id="MenuClose"><a href="#" onMouseOver="P7_autoLayers()"><img
src="/testing/2006/assets/_spacer.gif" width="750" height="75"></a></div>

So - hitting any of the top level links should show the associated submenu
and hide the others. Hitting any of the submenu links should show the
closer layer. Hitting the image in the closer layer should hide itself and
all the submenu layers.

The logic makes sense. The close menu image has the link to activate the
close menu when moused over - hiding all the submenus and the menu close
layer.

So, I made this change, but it is still not closing the submenu's. Is there
something else?
