Default dreamwever/fireworks web site help - 07-08-2004 , 12:45 PM

I had never made a website to completion before, and have only used go-live
in the past, well now I have the macromedia studio mx, and want to make a
killer site. However, I find the help files that come with the program
assume you have some basic knowledge which I do not. Here is what I need to
know to continue with my project:

1. I have created a pop up menu in fireworks, and now I am assuming that I
will want to take it into dreamweaver to integrate it into my site, the pop
up navigation is all I have completed as of yet. So, do I want to create a
framed page in DW and set my pop up menu in the top frame? If so, how do I
do this? I could probably just create a page for each of my content pages
and point them to each other, but then won't that mean that the pop up menu
loads each time I view a different page?

2. Ok, I have more questions than I thought so, where is the best resource
for learning fireworks, and dreamweaver from scratch, knowing nothing of
servers, code, or the programs themselves. I thought about buying the
dreamweaver for dummies book, but I did notice there was a dreamweaver bible
out, of which I really like the one made for photoshop, I live in the
midwest and am very busy, so there either are limited classes available in
my area, or I wouldn't be able to attend them if there were any. So, my
only option would be a comprehensive website with tutorials, or a really
good book.

If you plan on doing web design on a regular basis, do yourself a really
big favor. Learn HTML and CSS. There are a lot of online tutorials; if
you like books, try Elizabeth Castro, "HTML for the World Wide Web with
XHTML and CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide" from Peachpit. She walks you
through a series of exercises to learn specific aspects of web coding.
When you're through, it makes a good quick reference.

except as a customer.

To insert a dropdown menu from fireworks you just select "insert" then "image
objects" followed by clicking "fireworks HTML" then just select your menu and
it'll put it in for you.

You won't have to load the menu more then once as long as you keep loading the
same javascript files and remember, when using a javascript menu the search
engines can't find the links to your other pages making your site look like one
page.

To fix this simply put a text link to a "sitemap" or somthing along those
lines on your page with text links to every other page... not only dose this
help the viewer find were he/she's going the search engines find your website.

Dreamweaver is self explainitory you don't need books or tutorials to figure
out how it works the best way is to jump right in, when you get caught on a
snag you may want the book to fall back on or hey.. you can post on macromedia
forums!

This paragraph and good web sites are not compatible. Do not use these
pop-up menus.

You might also reconsider your use of frames.

Both of these choices are rather typical for beginning and inexperienced web
developers. Read these -

As Murray said, stay away from the DW popup menus. Check out the tutorials
and products available at http://www.projectseven.com/.

For learning Fireworks, I recommend first completing the included tutorials
and then following with Razzle Dazzle
(http://www.webdevbiz.com/pwf/razzle.cfm).

For learning Dreamweaver, I recommend first completing the included
tutorials and then following with one of the project seven design packs.
