Oh dear............someone else is having the problem. The EXACT same thing
was happening with my DW8. I never got beyond TRYING to define a site! DW8
would freeze and crash.

I GUESS I can do this. It's not like it's MY suggestions. This is direct
from Macromedia, and it sounds like you're having EXACTLY the same problem I
did. I will copy and paste the information they gave me:

The errors that you are getting might be related to corrupted site definitions
in Dreamweaver 8. The corruption usually happens when Dreamweaver 8 is
importing the site from Dreamweaver MX 2004. These site definitions do not get
deleted when you uninstall Dreamweaver 8, this might be the reason why you are
still getting the same issues even after reinstalling Dreamweaver 8.

1. Try to install this registry fix found on the TechNote below.

Dreamweaver 8 Emerging Issues:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/a3f38dcf

Note: This registry fix was primarily created to solve launching problems but
it does apply to your issue as well.

2. If you have ran the fix and you still get errors, please do a clean
reinstall of Dreamweaver by following the steps below.

I. Uninstall DW through Add/Remove Programs.

a. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel b. Select Dreamweaver and click on
Change (as opposed to Remove).
c. Click on Next and then select Remove.
d. Select Remove Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 preferences and configuration files.
e. Go through the usual steps on the next dialog boxes until you completely
uninstall Dreamweaver 8.

II. Manually delete any remaining folders/files, such as:

- "Dreamweaver 8" under Program Files
- Delete the "Licensing" folder under:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Macromedia\Licensing\

III. Delete the User Configuration folder. Back this up first if there are any
customized settings you want to keep:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8

IV. Delete any Registry keys for DW8. Check under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Macromedia\Dreamweaver \8
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Macromedia\Common\8 **

** This will delete your site definitions; make sure that you export all your
site definitions first.

Backing up and restoring Dreamweaver settings:
http://www.macromedia.com/go/tn_18736

IV. Restart the machine.

V. Disable any anti-virus or security software before installing. Reinstall
DW8.

Please let me know what happens.

Okay, so now let me tell you that none of this solved my problem for long.
Originally, DW was back up and running just fine. But then I installed an
extension, one that I have on DWMX2004 and it works fine there. But as soon as
I installed the extension into DW8, I was back with the same thing happening
again.

So, you might try the top stuff first and see if it works. And then maybe go
from there.

Hope that helps. It was REALLY frustrating for me! BIG TIME! Because I have
a client I'm doing work for and this was causing major slowdown!

PJ

Here is some other information Macromedia gave me. I am not sure, but I think
this was the FIRST stuff they wanted me to try, and then what I wrote above
came later. So maybe start here?

I understand that you're having issues when opening and trying to define a
site in Dreamweaver 8.

Dreamweaver usually indicates that a problem with the environment (such as the
Operating System, installed applications) or the page currently being edited
causes conflicts.

1. Issue can be caused by a conflict with other applications running. Please
try to restart your machine and then quit all other application/s except
Dreamweaver.

2. It is possible that you have a corrupted Dreamweaver configuration file.
Please try to rename the configuration folder and see if it will help.

- Go to drive:\documents and settings\username\application
data\macromedia\dreamweaver 8\
- There's supposed to be a 'configuration' folder there, rename it to
'configuration-bak'
- Restart Dreamweaver and check issue again.

3. User specific system settings can also cause the issue. Please try creating
a new Admin user account. Log in using the new account and then launch
Dreamweaver from there. See if you still get the error message.

4. If it continues to be an issue, please go through the TechNote below as it
provides more troubleshooting suggestions:
