Dreamweaver not putting files onto server

Dreamweaver does not seem able to put files onto my web site.

When I select files to be uploaded, I get the following message:

"Retrieving remote information from server" (This is not the problem)

Then, "Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server time. The Select Newer
and Synchronize commands will not be available"

If I hit "OK" the upload appears to proceed but I then get the message, "An
FTP error occurred - cannot get remote folder information. Access denied. The
file may not exist or there could be a permission problem."

If I upload files from the server end (not using Dreamweaver), everything
goes smoothly. Can someone tell me what is preventing Dreamweaver from
uploading files?

What happens if you enable Passive FTP for the Remote site's definition?

1. Yes, I had been able to upload files; I don't know what has changed.

2. I enabled Passive FTP and it made no difference. Still get the same messages.

Not to belabor the obvious, but something has. I'm betting that DW didn't
just spontaneously break, so I would start looking at the firewall (are you
on Windows? Which?).

2. What is "Server Compatibility optimization?"

For some reason, several other people are reporting this problem. In my case,
I can connect successfully to the server, then I get the error message about
the remote server time, then DW appears to upload the files and reports that
it has put the files on the server... but they do not end up on the server!
