Default Dreamweaver issue with text copied from Quark - 06-25-2004 , 10:13 AM

We are using Dreamweaver MX2004 and Quark XPress 6.1 in a Mac OSX environment,
and are getting strange error messages when text is copied and pasted from
Quark to Dreamweaver.
The error message is: "The document's current encoding can not correctly save
all of the characters within the document. You may want to change to UTF-8 or
an encoding that supports the special characters in this document."
We get this error message even when the original text does not have any
special characters (like trademarks, fractions, etc.). The web page, when
viewed in a browser, contains extraineous characters (like a "?") that does not
appear in our HTML document. Our current work-around requires us to first
paste the text into Word, and then copying/pasting into Dreamweaver. Has anyone
encountered this before? If so, how did you resolve it?

Are there typographer's quotes in any of your text (proper opening and
closing quotation marks)? What are the characters that aren't being carried
over properly?

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks for replying.
No, there are not any quotes or anything other than text in the Quark text we
are copying.
It is not an issue of characters not being carried over, but in the way
Dreamweaver reads the copied text. It seems as though the formatting done in
Quark creates an issue when transfered to an HTML document.
Have you run into this issue yourself? If so, how did you resolve?

I haven't run into this specific issue since I'm not a Quark user, but I
have seen issues with characters encoded outside of the typical iso-8859-1
character set. Does Quark have an encoding option? Perhaps you could
change the encoding to Unicode (UTF-8) for your Dreamweaver doc and try.
Just grasping at straws here, really, but it does seem like an encoding
issue of some sort. The question marks is pretty much the giveaway. Are
you using hard carriage returns in your Quark doc, or are you letting text
flow normally? Is this about the same place the question marks appear?

Best regards,
Chris

We solved it by saving text as word file then copying and pasting from word.
About the same as you're doing. If there's a better way I want to know, too.

Unfortunately, Quark does not have an encoding option. As far as using carriage
returns/other formatting issues, we have tested copying one word (no
characters) from Quark to DW, and get the same results. The question mark is
not the only stray character we see-it varies from the question mark to a < or
=, and vertually any other letter or symbol. Very hard to explain, but we also
think it is an encoding issue. We are just unsure of how to get un-encoded text
out of a Quark page and onto our web pages.
Thanks for responding.
