Default Dreamweaver CS3 - Doesn't display MySQL tables - 06-22-2008 , 07:01 AM

Hi folks

Research has indicated that there was a Dreamweaver bug (and update fix) in
version 8 whereby the listing of MySQL tables was empty if the database name
contained a non alphnumeric character.

I seem to be faced with this problem in CS3 (v9).

Can someone confirm or deny that this bug exists in this version ?

Can someone provide a solution ?

Thanks in anticipation.

The answer is that this bug does not exist in CS3 (v9).

The illusion of this bug is created when you don't have the database name
correct in the "Testing Server" parameters! .... And I would of course like to
blame my ISP for adding a prefix to the database name I used on creation and
generating the confusion in the first place !!! <g>

OK, we accept that blame. You're exonerated. 8)

Its good to have someone to blame <g>.

I've documented what I've discovered in the course of doing this. Since you
seem to have a rather large presence here <g>, maybe you could cast your expert
eye over the result and let me know if there are any glaring errors/ommissions.

Cheers.

Ewww - frames! 8)

* I would fill in the default images folder
* I would just put 'http://www.example.com' in the HTTP address field. Or
even leave it blank. (I would always use 'example.com' since that's exactly
the purpose it was created for)
* the FTP host may not be 'ftp.xxxx.xxx', it might also be 'www.xxxx.xxx',
depending on the host
* the FTP login is not always 'MySiteName.com' - it might be 'monkeybutt',
too. This would depend on the host.
* I never use the FTP connection option for my Testing server. My testing
server is a local *nix box. But, given the constraints mentioned above,
your information looks accurate.
* you cast the blame on DW for appending the /public_html/ folder to the URL
prefix, when actually that is your problem. That folder should not be
included in the HTTP address field at all, which is a field that you fill
out.

The rest seems OK. And with these modifications, you have a workable
tutorial....

Point taken. This document is destined to be used by a major "Reseller's ISP"
here in the UK, and so was designed to match their setup. I have added wording
to draw attention to these points.

Ooops.... that was a mixture of a typo and then a consequent mistake in trying
to establish where Dreamweaver was getting its info from. Now corrected.

I still blame Dreamweaver for this append, and there is a further bug in this
default value where the FTP login starts "ftp" and not "www". If you are in a
position to feed things back up the line, I would consider this as the one
single issue which would prevent DW users making a connection of this type. See
amended document for details.

Not really. www.example.com was created expressly for this purpose. It
belongs to nobody, and there is no site there. Anything else you might use
could well already be in use.

Sorry - don't know what you are saying here.
What I am saying is that I think there are a couple of bugs in the way
Dreamweaver comes up with the default value for the URL Prefix. I believe that
these bugs will prevent the avarage user making a database connection.

The worst thing about a non-working default value, is that the novice user will
assume that Dreamweaver knows better than they do in terms of what should be
entered in this field. A blank field would actually be better in this case,
forcing the user to figure it out without being misled.

Try it for yourself .....

Define a new site on your development machine.

Set up the "Local info" section and the "Remote info" section along the lines
defined in the first two screengrabs shown here :

http://www.dbasedeveloper.co.uk/DWtoMySQL/DWtoMySQL.htm

Now move on to the "Testing Server" section,
Select "PHP MySQL"
Select "FTP"

Now what do you see in the "URL prefix" field ?

Hopefully you see the same as I do ... shown in the fourth (small) screengrab.

Two problems with this default string?

Would you agree that this will never connect?

Bug?
