Thanks for the suggestion, but my prefs file is completely blank. I erased it
as part of my attempt to troubleshoot the crash-- and since Dreamweaver has
never launched successfully, it never rebuilt the prefs file. Anyone have any
other suggestions?

I can send you my prefs file and you can look at it to disable the
startup screen.

Did anyone else who is having this problem run Xslimmer or Monolingual?
Because I am convinced that is what caused the problem on my computer-- and I
am very close to a solution-- I replaced my textencodings and printer libraries
(i'll post details if the last bit works)-- and now DW starts, but all the
icons are messed up-- it's looking for quicktime components which are " mach-o,
but wrong architecture" ... so I am attempting to replace those now. We'll see.

That was the solution, I replaced the following folders with the files from a
friends Intel mac (running the same versions of everything):

/System/Library/Printers/Libraries/
/System/Library/TextEncodings
/System/Library/Quicktime

I had to sudo from the terminal to back up the folders first, then when I drag
the new files into the folders, I had to authenticate. After a restart it
worked. So I am convinced the problem was one of the apps that stripped PPC
code out of system files-- I guess-- and I am idiot for running it. But here's
my solution to the problem-- your mileage may vary-- but first check your
Console to see what errors are being thrown when the app crashes.

joshmiller,

If you please give some tips or suggestion on how to use sudo in Terminal. I
don't use it very much around Terminal to execute Unix commands to perform
specific tasks.

So I believe that your suggestion might lost someone else or other
participants who are not familiar with sudo commands, so give them some
guideline and suggestion. It is something that you might want to add a hint of
advice about using sudo command or recommend it not to use unless someone
understand what it means and what is going to happen if someone don't know much
about Unix, if it is done in wrong way, use gargaged Unix command to erase the
entire file on Mac. I am not going to say what command here. LOL

But a tip or few would be nice. Thanks, josh, for some heads up.

Cheers, Brian

I would recommend if people aren't familiar with the terminal, that they not
use my suggestion, and just reinstall the OS. I am convinced the problem
occurred because of the PPC stripping apps I ran (and would suggest no one else
use them ... ever!). So if you were stupid enough to run the apps (like me),
hopefully you have unix skills. Good luck-

Hi. Had similar problem but not due to fiddling around with printer libraries.
It was an all from scratch system installation. It was the? STARTUP SCREEN!!!
