You can also just put the file in the directory you need. Then just give
that URL to your client in an email. They can just click on that and it
will download.

It depends on the type of file and the preferences in the browser.

Well I don't want them to have to right click to download it. I want them to just click the download link and it will bring up the window where it will download to your desktop.

Then you need to stream it to the browser using a script on the server.

You could also ZIP the file, but then the end user needs to unzip it on
their end. That may or may not work for your particular situation.

But maybe your users want it? Maybe they want to view the image in the
browser before storing it to disk?

This would unnecessarily complicate things: the user has to download it,
locate it on disk and fire up his image viewer. Additionally trying to
"force" a browser to prompt a download dialog with a correct filename
can be tricky.

The easiest and most accessible solution is a simple link to the hi-res
version.

That's how I deliver my photos for my other half as commercial
photographer. Even if it opens in a browser, it has downloaded and then
they can save the image whereever.

I often stuff the file using stuffit.
