Default doc type necessary? - 10-31-2005 , 04:27 PM

My web page is fine in many browsers with a doc type included in the code,
EXCEPT when using a macintosh IE 5.2 browser.
Then I encounter a problem with my pop-out menu text being wrapped to the next
line when words have a hyphen between them, i.e. EMU-AAUP.

The only way I have found to fix this so far, is to remove the doc type
statement entirely from the page. Then it appears correctly in all the browsers
I am testing on both Win and Mac systems.

Look at the "About" and "Contact Us" pop-out menus for this problem on the mac
browser. The test site is:
http://people.emich.edu/snicosia/wtest/emuabouthome.html

My 2 questions are:
1) Is it ok to remove the doc type from all of the pages?

2) Is there a better way to fix the mac IE 5.2 problem?

Thanks!

File not found.

Not if you want your pages to render in standards mode and validate.

I guess that would be to not rely on quirks for your page layout.
