DIV panel with variable height

Hello.

I have some problems with div fluid layout. The web page contains three
columns, a div panel in the middle with two div panels floating left and
right. I want to make the three columns the same height so that i can
setup some visual effects, but the height of the floating divs are only
large enough to wrap their contents and won't expand to fill the blank
areas below unless i assign a static value.
Is there anyway to do this without changing their height in javascript?

Yes, you fake the columns with bg images

divs unlike tables are their own entity and bear no relation to each
other hence the height problem.
