Default Design for 15" Monitor - 06-29-2004 , 03:13 PM

I am designing with a 17" monitor, but am getting complaints due to the
large number of people viewing on a 15" monitor. I'm not sure how to change
my settings within Dreamweaver for this. The window sizing down in lower
right hand corner of the workspace is stuck on 1010 X 414 all other options
are greyed out. How do I design on a 17" monitor for 15" viewing?

Thanks in advance!

size of monitor is irrelevant when it comes to window size..

it's more about browser window size and resolution....

most people nowadays use 1028X780, however some people still use 800 X600
which at full screen only goes to about 760/770 pixels max...

therefore you need to bear this in mind with your table widths..

if you try and use the percentage variable instead of fixed widths you can
make your site flexible and stretch to the window size..

It is not monitor dimensions but monitor resolution that matters. So if you
are viewing and designing at 1010x414 (a resolution I've not heard of btw)
then you should indeed be checking at the very least at 800x600.

To get those other resolutions NOT to be greyed out in DW, simply click on
that little icon in the upper right of the Design Window (at least on a PC)
to toggle Maximized OFF. This will make each open document appear in its
own window rather than to be tabbed in Design View. Btu it also allows you
to select other resolutions from the dropdown on the bottom bar of Design
View.

Actually according to www.echoecho.com, the mean width of a browser window
on an 800x600 monitor is really only 719 px !

After reading the link that Gary gave you, have a look at the tables
tutorial in my sig,
will teach you how to build a 'fluid' table layout that will be useable no
matter what window size.

If you enter "javascript:resizeTo(800,600)" -- without the quotes -- into
the address bar of your browser, it will resize the browser window (or
viewport) to 800x600.

If you add the command to your favourites menu (I have dragged and dropped
it onto my Links bar in IE), you can reset your browser viewport to 800x600,
or any resolution of your choice, at the click of a button.

I have set up several of these at different resolutions just by changing the
numbers inside the brackets:
800x600
1024x768 etc

May be of interest, follow up to Johns' post about having your browser
window open at specified size.
I use this method all the time.
