google adwords

My friend is paying a lot for google adwords and isnt getting very far with
it, its costing her £100 a month and has done for a long time. What is a
really good way to drive traffic to her site apart from the usual keywords,
tags etc. She wants to be fairly high up in google when you type in a word
relating to the business she is in.
