Yes, which I think is the point here. The kind of people using these
products instead of building there own, or as a shortcut to a solution,
are the kind who don't keep it up to date.

I had a look after your previous recommendation, but wasn't sure how it
worked, as you needed other stuff to get it going. I will revisit it again.

Not sure what other stuff you need to get it going? It's a MySQL
database and a bunch of PHP files.

Download the core version. Upload it to your server and run the
install. Customize it with the design/code you create yourself.

I've been very pleased with it so far. Takes some getting used to, as
they all do.

Oh, I thought it needed Ruby too, hmm...

It took a book to get me used to Joomla! Lets see what I can do with
this one then

Can anyone tell me what the purpose is of using Dreamweaver to build a
database driven website if using a CMS is so much easier? I mean, if a CMS
is
the way to go, what's the purpose of owning Dreamweaver?
A quality CMS manages your content.

A quality HTML editor helps you build your HTML.

They are two tools that work together, rather than being mutually exclusive.

I think the popular free ones are a security risk if the person who

'Free' is a red herring in that sentence.

The more popular any software is, the more of a security risk it is in the
context that if/when a security hole is known, it can be exploited.

The CMS is likely the least popular of the products being used, though. The
server OS, the server software, and the DB software are likely the more
popular products in the mix.

CMS is good for small websites, but it also opens your website to security

Nonsense. Depends entirely on the CMS - AND the capability of folks
who develop it, install it, and maintain it.

All CMS means is content management system. There are quite literally
hundreds of packaged solutions available, some free, some commercial,
and some custom-built. Labeling them all security risks is
irresponsible.

Sorry. I didn't mean to label them as security risk. But you have to agree
that that hacks for these popular CMS can be found on the net without much
difficulty. Specially Joomla, one of the most popular CMS, has had quite a few
security lapses over time.

thanks,

I took another look, and its not the same thing I looked at before, that
needed Ruby on Rails...I dont know what I was looking at before, I
thought I got there from a link in here but can't find it. Expression
Engine does look very good, and I intend to have a good play with it.

I like it A LOT. Yesterday I attended the first ever EE Roadshow in
Vanouver. Got to meet folks from Ellis Labs and a number of others
active in the EE community.

Their recommendation, which I intend to start doing, is to become
active on the forums. Everyone I spoke to who has been using EE for a
while couldn't say enough good things about the support available
there.
