Default Database Daddy's - where are you? (and moms) ;) - 11-23-2003 , 05:18 PM

HA! - Hey Gang,

LTNS - I hope everyone is doing well.

I have an off topic question. However, I knew this would be the best place to get an answer (old frineds). So, I hope you won't mind.

I own my own box. (Windows/ MS SQL) And everything is running fine.

My problem, however, is that I simply can't find any ASP based forums that match my desires. All of the ones I like are based on PHP/mySQL. And having exhausted my search to my satisfaction, I've finally decided to go with Invision Powerboard - a PHP/mySQL product.

I see then, my choices being this.

1) Inatall IPB on my Windows Box - (using their Driver to run off MS SQL) oh boy!!!

2) Install IPB on my Windows Box - (also installing mySQL) problems????? :/

3) Securing hosting elsewhere on someone elses box. money!!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway - given that situation can ya help a fellow out?

As usual, I have no idea what I'm doin... But I'm... aaaaaa...

Keepin da faith..

LOL

Cheers Everyone!

Hi JK,

There is an option for ASP users and MS SQL and with a little bit of editing
you can get what you want. Or atleast I found it a solution to do what I
needed. Maybe it might work for you?

The forum is located at... http://webwizguide.com/ It works for Both MS
Access and MS SQL. It is similar in appearance to Invision boards. It is
also skinnable. Here is what I did with it... http://www.geekforum.com/forum

But if you want to use Invision I would install it with MySQL to avoid
headaches of reworking SQL statements to work with MS SQL. But if you want
little hassle then try a third party for hosting. Just depends on how much
control you want.

Hope this helps.

Hey Joey,

Thanks a lot for the response. I believe I can take that as a suggestion to go with #1,

(i.e. run everything off MySQL and use the IPB Driver.)

For me that really would be the home run option I think. I've already inquired about the stablity of the IPB Driver over at IPB and they tell me it's very stable. But of course, they have a vested interest in doing so. That's why I was hoping to just generally get a few more observations.

I think maybe I should also add this. The forums that you suggested looked great to me. In fact, I may join! lol.. However, I really do have to go with IPB. The way the concept for this site is working out (without going into to much detail) - after folks reach a certain level on my site I hope to transition them off to another. And that other site (owned by someone else) is already running of IPB.

Wierd concept, huh? lol But I always have been one of the freaky people. Perhaps you've even seen me.

I'm the guy dressed all in black that shops for groceries at 3:40 in the morning.

<just kidding> lol

Anyway - thanks again. Would also love to hear some other comments.

Cheers!

I know you've probably already looked, but there are 76 ASP based
forums at
http://www.hotscripts.com/ASP/Scripts_and_Components/Discussion_Boards/index.html

Is there some particular feature you're having trouble finding?

Hey Gary,

Thanks. In addition to what I may have mentioned it's also must a matter of taste and ease of use. I like the layout of IPB as it comes out of the box. It also comes preconfiged with all the jazzy stuff I need. Price is right, and there's no reason for me to install a Mod for each lil add on that I want.

I'm already running Snitz. http://forums.spider-food.net In fact, have been doing so for several years now. But again (at least to me), it seems like just to arrive at what I would call basic functionality as far as the PHP boards go that I've seen, I'd have to install upteen gazillion little Mods to make it happen.

In the end then, I'm really just interested in selecting the best of these three possible choices.

1) IPB / Windows Box / MS-SQL / (with a driver)

2) IPB / Windows Box/ mySQL / (php installed on a windows machine)

3) or.. Hosting Elsewhere (my least favorite choice

--------------------------------

Again, thanks. And if anyone with expertise in this area has any words of wisdom to share, please fill in.

I believe either #1 or #2 would work. I'm just looking for some guidance on whether or not out of those two choices one is better than the other.

Cheers!

And Keep on Rockin! 8)

Okay. I can understand that. Personally, I've never put a site on a
Windows server, so I can't offer much in the way of a suggestion.

Go with # 2. PHP and MySQL are free and work fine on a Windows server.
