Default Dancing Nav Bar Doing My Head In! - 11-04-2004 , 02:58 PM

Hi Folks,
I have a problem with my nav bar. Address: www.kitchenplans.biz On loading
pages "Design Services" and "About Us" the title graphic and nav bar (pos'
the whole page) shifts to the right. Osgood very kindly advised me to put
title & nav bar in seperate table which I've done but to no avail.
Happens to most effect on maximized window esp in: Netscape, Opera and
Firefox. Doesn't happen in IE or in other browsers with window size just big
enough to show whole page. On my monitor set at 1280x960 the effect is realy
amateurish.
Hoping somebody can help.
Gene-Stevo.

It's working fine for me. Maybe I'm not understanding what the problem is?

Learn to love it. This is Moz's way of giving you a "gotcha". The dancing
is the page contents moving left to make room for the vertical scrollbar.
Crazy, really....

Hi Chijo,
Many thanks for taking a look. If you imagine a titlel graphic is set say
20px to the right relative to all other pages, then when that page loads, it
will appear to be in the wrong place. On a 56k connection it wouldn't be
seen but on b/band, where the page loads so fast or if the page is loading
from cache, the title (& nav bar in my case) appears to jump.
May I ask what browser/screen res you're viewing at?
Thanks again for your trouble,
Gene Stevo.

IE automagically takes out space for a vertical scrollbar whether you use
it or not; Moz-based browsers don't allocate the space until you need the
scrollbar. I didn't see the jump on the Design Services, but I did on
About Us. Design Services was long enough to need a scrollbar; About Us
wasn't.

Speaking of amateurish... You may want to reconsider using that animated
gif as a mail link. For that matter, you may want to consider creating a
mail form rather than a mailto link, which are problematic for several
reasons.

MURRAY YOU ARE GOD! I've been pulling my hair out for f***ing days over
this. People keep telling me not to be so fussy, but if it isn't right it
isn't right. So, now all I have to do is tell my viewers to use a short
window or stick some more content on the offending pages
Thank You So Much, now I can get p***ed and get on with my life (or my site
at least, though not sure which order). Oh how I laughed as I watched the
vert' scroll bar appear and disapear after I read your reply. Ho ho ho,
aren't I a silly sausage.
Cheers,
Gene-Stevo.

Thanks Joe,
I take your point about the gif, must have had a few that night. It'll be
gone by the weekend
Not sure what you mean by a mail form though (unless your talking about
forms type forms in which case I haven't worked out how to set up my host
provided CGI bin yet), I design kitchens for a living not web sites so I'm
still effectively a newbie with DW. I'll be sure to look it up though.
Thanks once again for your advice and most welcome input.

Skip the CGI. You're on an Apache server with PHP, and PHP has to be about
the easiest language to do a mail form in. Search the group archives for
something like 'mail form php', and you should come up with a bunch of
posts about how to do it.
