CSS styling of tableless design

I am pretty new to tableless design with CSS and and am not really sure
how certain things are done. I have a three column design and some of
the columns have text in them. I am wondering how the best way to style
them is. Should I style the column tag itself for type, or should I
create another style to style within the column? Sorry, I hope this
makes sense, I don't have all the lingo down yet...
