Default CSS and the ID selector - 07-08-2003 , 03:52 PM

I am having trouble getting the Dreamweaver CSS Styles palette/Properties palette to acknowledge ID based selectors.

I can link to the external .css file with all the #attributes (for the ID selector) all day long, no problem. BUT I want to be able to edit/add those #attributes on the fly in the Properties palette but they don't show up like they do when CSS with the class attribute. If you use those class .attributes, the Properties palette/ CSS Style palette will acknowledge them and let you switch/add/change to whatever CSS style. BUT if you use ID with the #attributes, all you can do is link in the CSS sheet then code in those ID values manually. Anybody got a fix for this?

Is it that hard to just open the CSS file to edit them?

Granted, DW should let you edit any CSS. The only thing I can think of is
that ID styles only apply to one element on a page and, as such, DW may be
'hiding' it so you can't apply it to other elements.

It's easy to edit the CSS sheet, just not the pages it's linked to. I get your drift on the ID use once situation. I don't suppose it'd be too hard to switch to the class attribute, it'd just be nice if Dreamweaver did both class/span and ID.

thanks,
Brent

It does. I'm not sure what you're having trouble doing. Could you be more
specific? Are you having trouble applying your id's to tags/objects in DW
interface or actually writing them or what?

Lol, that must be it, because they do include this capability in a kind of
non-intuitive way. You can't do it in Properties, but you can do it in the
Design Panel under CSS Styles - "Edit Styles." You will note in Design -
CSS Styles that if you select the "Apply Styles" button you have only
classes to work with. However, if you select the Edit Styles button, you
will see all of your ID selectors, and if you right-click on any one of
these the forth pop-up option is "apply." Selecting this will in fact
apply the ID selector to any element selected in design or code view.

Ah. Now I see what you're trying to do. There are 3 ways that I know of. One is
what trx just told you. The next is to select the tag/object you'd like to add
the id to and click the quick tag editor and add it. The best way I know of
(through the Design interface), however, is to select the tag/object and right
click the highlighted/selected tag in the bottom left corner of design view. A
contextual menu will pop up w/ 4 options: Remove Tag, Edit Tag, SetClass & Set
ID. Just go to set id and there is a list of all the ids. You could also do it
in code view in half the time.
