OK, This is weird. I just posted the page to a site so that I could show you
what's going on. I went to the page to make sure it was there, and now it
works!!! is it something to do with the CSS not displaying properly in a
browser not actually conected to the internet / or active website or something
else ? I'm totally confused now.

I guess I'm not totally confused, but there is a slight puzzlement there....

Depending on how you set up your styles and if you are previewing in DW
MX2004, there could indeed be a large difference in what you see locally
and what you see on the web.

I use DW MX 2004. Does using DW MX 2004 make a difference? If so how? thanks for the help so far by the way.

When you preview in MX2004 using the default Temp file method,
Dreamweaver reads linked and imported style sheets and actually embeds
them in the page. No other version of Dreamweaver did this. So, if you
have a style sheet imported to hide it from version 4 browsers, for
instance, it will not be hidden when you preview. Same goes for various
media types.

That could get really irritating as you go about building a site, especially if
you don't have it loaded up to the web, you'd spend half the time trying to fix
problems that aren't there. Surely there must be an easier way of testing a
site before it goes 'live' to make sure all the bugs are ironed out first.

Why?

You build the site to standards. You test it in contemporary browsers. You
let Netscape4x go until you are done.
