Default Creating Workable Editable Regions - 08-01-2004 , 12:14 PM

I am trying to create editable regions in my template. (I'm using Dreamweaver
MX.) Basically I have a Nav bar down the side, a title across the top, and an
address at the bottom of the page. I'd like the rest of the page to be
editable. I put my curser at the upper left hand corner of the area I want to
be editable, went to Insert/Template Object/Editable Region, and clicked OK.
It showed a small box marked editable region. When I go to the documents I
created from the template, it doesn't seem like I can add layers to them at
all. All I can do is add text, and when I type too much it moves the title.
I'd like to have one big editable region where I can work basically like I do
when i don't use a template. Is this possible and how do I do it? I've used
the Dreamweaver help, searched the forum, and checked
www.dreamweavermx-templates.com which was recommended in a forum entry. None
seem to solve my problem. Thanks for the help.

Show me your page please.

Here's a very simple way to understand how to do this.

Create a new page. Insert a table on the page that has 2 rows and 2
columns. Merge the two adjacent cells into a single cell. Put your title
there. In each cell in the bottom row, set your valign (using the Property
inspector to "top". Nest a new table in each cell. Place your nav elements
in the left nested table. Save the page as a template. Then insert an
editable region in the right nested table. Save the page again.

Now, when you spawn a child, you will have exactly what you want.

BUT - if you want to also insert 'layers', then using this method will only
produce problems, since you will only be able to insert a 'layer' inside the
table, and that's wrong.

To also allow you to insert "layers" on the page, then you need to (in the
Template page) select the table (use the Tag Selector to make sure you have
the <table> tag selected), press the right arrow once to position the
insertion point just to the right of the table, and insert another editable
region. Save the template and let the child pages update (if any). Now,
you can safely insert a 'layer' on a child page by positioning the insertion
point within the second editable region and using INSERT | Layout > Layer.
