Default Create / remove folders on Dreamweaver CS4 - 04-02-2009 , 11:43 AM

I currently have been given the task of updating an existing website.
Over the years this website has grown a lot and there are now a lot of files
and folders some of them have not been used for years. It has been managed by
different persons and even services and I just arrived in the company.

I am pretty new to Dreamweaver and I thought that I should rearange the
pictures into subfolders so that I could find them easily (rather than using
the asset tab). As I transfered the files into my new subfolder on my root
site, I chose to update the links. After changing 2 pictures and uploading the
2 pages that I had amended, the pictures I changed did not appear online (web
browser). I only obtained a red x and the alternative text. After a few
attemps, I decided to change it back to one folder and to delete my sub-folder.
The links were updated once more but now I can not view any pictures at all
even though the links seem to be correct.
I can view the pictures on Dreamweaver but I can not see them on my web
browser.

How do I make it right again? How come, even with the links updated, can I not
view the pictures online?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi. When you uploaded the .html files, did you also remember to upload the
pictures again in their new subfolders? Since you can view them in
Dreamweaver, I bet your problem is related to how the pictures are organized on
your server.

When you move files around using the DW Files Panel, the links in the code are
updated but the images are only physically moved locally. You then need to
replicate the changes separately on the server.

You have changed the links in the HTML page and uploaded the page but the
images on the server are not yet located where the new links are pointing to on
the server. Hence the red x.

e.g. "/oldfolder/pics/photo1.jpg" has been moved to "/images/photo1.jpg" and
the link updated in the HTML page.

However, on the server, "photo1.jpg" is still in the "/oldfolder/pics" folder.

Re-upload your images from DW and all should link correctly again.

Note that "/oldfolder/pics/photo1.jpg" still exists on the server until you
delete it in Remote View. No-one will see it because no links are pointing to
it.

Thanks for your answers.

After creating and then removing my folders, I did syncronize my local and
remote folders so that they would be the same.
Following your replies, I uploaded again the pictures but the result was the
same. I then tried to upload the pages containing those pictures again but
unfortunately I still have the red x and the alternative text only.

What I tried afterwards was to change the picture altogether on one of the
page. I therefore took the picture, put it on the local root folder, integrated
it on my page, then I synchronized the folders on the local and remote sites
and then uploaded the page. The picture still does not appear but the alt text
did.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Can you post a link to the site?

A website is worth a thousand words of explanation :-)

The website is www.ucl.ac.uk/residences.
I checked the links on DW and they are not broken...

Which page does not show the images in your browser? Which browser are you
using?

I see all images just fine.

Have you tried clearing your browser cache (Temporary Internet Files)?

I can't view any of the residences page pictures (for example:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/residences/halls/catered/ramsay/index.shtml)
I am using Internet Explorer. I tried to view the pages with Firefox and it
doesn't work either. Which browser are you using?
It's not the temporary files as I delete those very often and I did it again
just to be on the safe side.

Thanks.
