Default Converting from Word question - 12-01-2003 , 01:19 PM

I just made my first Word document into an html page. In Word, I went file,
save as a web page. But when I bring it into DW, I see a lot of yellow
symbols with exclamation points. What are these, and is it possible to to
not have to see them?

Then when I preview in Explorer, I see lots of tiny little rectangles all
over - best way I can describe it. Any idea appreciated. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

They're code elements that you wouldn't normally see in the browser. You can
turn these off in DW. EDIT >> PREFERENCES >> INVISIBLE ELEMENTS

Word produces REALLY crappy + bloated markup. It's horrific. For starters,
open the file in DW and then run the COMMANDS >> CLEAN UP WORD HTML tool.
That will help. Even better would be to find a copy of HTMLTidy (freeware)
which allows you to export Word files in a MUCH cleaner manner.

Hi Kevs,
These yellow are extra stuff that word inserts in the page. Dreamweaver has
a few ways to help you clean these up. In your case since you saved as html,
you can open the file in dreamweaver, then select the menu Commands > Clean
up Word HTML.

The rectangles in the browser may be something else. Maybe some missing
images? See if it goes away when you clean up the html.

BTW the other way to do this is to not save as web page, but instead import
the .doc file into dreamweaver (File > Import > Word Document). When you
import, dreamweaver will automatically convert the word document to clean
html. This method is basically the same, but sometimes gives slightly
different results than Clean up Word HTML, so you might try both methods to
see what works better.
