Thierry,

thanks for the info. All good advice. But I have questions (by which you'll
be able to tell that web design is *not* my main thing):

1. How do I determine doc type? (tutorial on this?)

2. What do you mean by "title" in a link?

3. It seems that DW is setting a table height for me automatically. How do I
delete it? By removing completely or what?

TIA,

Lane

Hi Lane,
You should include a DTD (DocType) Declaration in all your documents.
You "should" use "title" in your links and you should not use "height" as
a
table attribute.

The W3C validator is here:
http://validator.w3.org

Better, you could download Firefox
(http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/) and install the "web developer
extension" (you'll have access to a few valuable tools).

HTH,
Thierry

Quick suggestion
Remove the absolute widths from the tables and use % instead. This should
stop the horizontal scrolling on 800 X 600.

Thanks, Joe. That's a great idea! Link will help, too...

Also, I remember seeing links to web sites that will validate code,

again? This time, I'll save them!!

In addition to the advice you've already received (and I absolutely agree
with thenovice about getting FireFox and the Web Developer extension),
get a copy of Lynx (text mode browser). This will give you some idea how
your site looks to those using assistive devices, as well as how it looks
to search engines.

Go to http://browsers.evolt.org/ to find links to download just about any
browser which has ever made a GET request of a web host.

Opera also has a "Emulate text browser" mode.

Cool! I've got Opera...

What other browsers are worth having for checking purposes?

Probably NN4.x, IE 5.5, IE 6, some Moz-based (NN7, FF x), and if you
can swing it, IE and Safari on a Mac. And even though AOL/Win uses
IE from the current installation, sometimes it can display things
differently than IE does.
Yep, I guess I *should* instal NS4.7, didn't bother after I upgraded to a
brand new system. I don't have many clients who are interested in NS4, so
am steadily moving away from that.. but should at least check them

However... The answer to your question really lies in your server
logs if the site is already online. Look at them and see how many of
what browsers are hitting the site, and that will give you some idea
what to test in. For example, my web dev site gets more hits with
FireFox than any other sites I track.
I would guess that would be because of the type of people browsing to your
website - would they be developers rather than the mom/pop variety? Not
sure what your website is related to Joe - sorry

Time to check my stats again, haven't for a while...
Thanks Joe.

For testing pupose (CC), be *aware* that they all send the
identification string that corresponds to the more recent version
installed.
Not sure if I want to go this route Thierry - brand new system and all :-)
I'd rather ask for a site check if I have to - did you have any problems
running dual versions?

Opera 6 is pretty "buggy" so it's good to have it (if it works in v6

Ah, ok, so better to get V7 then.

Thanks.

No real tutorials, but go here for explanation
http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/valid-dtd-list.html

The html 4.01 transitional is probably right for you I'd say

Check the above link for info on this too.

Highlight the table tag in the bottom left of DW and delete the height in
the property inspector.

The known problems are not that serious. And when you know about them they
are easy to avoid.
When I have *multiple versions of IE running*, I know that I:
- cannot click on a link in OE (OE would shut down).
- cannot clik on links to open popup windows.
- cannot use the Favorites folder.

Because I'm using these standalone versions for testing purpose *only*,
these minor "bugs" are not a problem at all.
IE5 broken box model doesn't give one much choice; being able to test your
work in IE5/IE6 is - IMO - a must. And being able to do it on the same
machine is great!

I was kind of saying the opposite
If your layout is OK in Opera 6 it should be fine in v7. I guess the key is
to list what browsers you're willing to support and only install these ones.

As thenovice said, Lynx is cool too because it makes you look at your markup
in a very different way. I like to use the "disable styles" feature in FF
too.

Regards,
Thierry

I didn't say that and I can't take the credit for someone else's post, even
though I do use Lynx for testing :-)

How about this though http://www.gwmicro.com/

Cheers
