Roll over the 1st thumb - the red band at the bottom of the image was the
same
col values as the background... but it appears like this.
As murray states, you simply can NOT match colors in a JPG to anything. JPG
compression will always shift the colors to some degree.

What you want to do is not 'fill in' the space with any background color.
Just trim the image. Alternatively, consider using GIF (might not be ideal)
or PNG (might work well) with transparency to avoid this issue altogether.

Just looked at the thumbs - how can I make the files smaller - they're just 72 dpi at 100%, saved as jpegs with 8 compression. r u saying compress them more?
You're saving them with a colour profile and exif data embedded which is
making the files much larger than they need to be. You need to strip
that data out when you save them for the web.

You're also using a Canon sRGB profile rather than the standard IEC
61966-2.1 sRGB profile. This is probably not a big issue, but you might
as well choose the right one.

Yes the col profile was selected - I did a 'save as' with this unchecked (it
lists the Canon Profile u mentioned) it saves about 4k! On a 60K file, that's
surely not worth worrying about. U also mention 'exif data embedded'... what's
this as couldn't see it anywhere. Maybe that's why they're still big?

I was looking at the small thumbnail images. They're about 20k each.
Losing the colour profile and exif data should get that down to about 4k.

Using 'Save for Web...' should remove colour and exif data. Using 'Save
as...' will retain it.
