cleaning up code

Im wondering what the benifits are to cleaning up code. I mean I understand
the basic desire to have a site that's as clean and stylistic as possible, but
is there a true benifit to it? Im wondering because Ive made my site
(amateurish to be sure) and it loads and views like I want it to. However I
know the coding leaves a lot to be desired (or so Ive been told). If there is
indeed a benifit to this, how can I go about doing it without changing things
in the site by accident?

In addition to Murray's comments.
You might also have the same code on several pages. This can be
optimised and moved to an external file. The user only has to download
this file once - to cache.
