Can't upload file - FTP error - file activity incomplete

I'm totally new to Dreamweaver and websites - trying to pick up and run with a
voluntary organisation's website. I have the public_html folder on my PC. I
have set up the 'New Site' within Dreamweaver; made changes to the index.htm
and have tried numerous ways of 'putting file to the remote site'.
I get the error message as above - FTP error - file activity incomplete re
this 1 file called index.htm.

I have no idea how to trouble shoot this - used a colleague who successfully
uploaded a sample index1.htm, yet when I tried I couldn't do anything; used my
website host technical support but they don't know Dreamweaver and although
they tried various ways they couldn't help.

Please, is there anyone who can throw some light of what might be the
problem?:sad;

Hi Eunice,

In your site definition in DW, you set up the FTP parameters. In the
Advanced tab, check the following:

Access: FTP
FTP Host: Enter the URL of the server, without any http:// or www
or subdirectories (i.e. just servername.domain )
Host directory: /public_html/
Login: Use your username that you created the site with
Password: Use your password for that account

Select the "Save" and the "Use Passive FTP" check boxes. Then click "Test".
You should get a message saying "Macromedia Dreamweaver connected to your
Web Server successfully."

If this doesn't work, then you need to double check your login information
and your Internet connection.

However I have all these in place, albeit I only discovered tonight the need
to select passive FTP. It has made no difference.
Other feedback to me suggested that not having the same files in both Local
and Remote could be a problem. If so as I wanted to download a copy of the
Remote Site and use that as my Local site. I have tried to download the remote
site from within Dreamweaver and now can't find where it has been stored on my
pc.
Any other thoughts Steve or anyone?

If you have your site selected in DW, you should be able to toggle between
local and remote site views. If you select Remote View and click the down
arrow, it will get the site.

Hi, to anyone that can help,

DW is not transferinf the files to the site, I checked the file activity and it
said "file not transfered".
Also I red that might be because there is no space in the remote folder of the
site, so I took down some files, and I tried again but I had the same result
"file not transfered".

This is a bug in CS4 also (if you ask me) - need to check passive FTP in
your site
management.

It's usually not a problem with DW. Such errors are usually associated with
a) server permission problems or b) your local firewall settings.

In the case of the former, check with your host. Otherwise, read this -

I am having the same problem, but it is intermittent. It just started
happening after months of using DWCS3. Once, after saving a new file
locally, it would not put the file and the error said no access to my
local c: hard drive! (I do have adminstrator permissions on the
computer.) I lost the file completely and it was replaced by the error
message. I can't remember my exact steps, but it included renaming
files and creating a new file outside DW. The last time it was
putting a editied .css file and the remote file would overwrite
changes made on the local file after I tried to put it remotely. The
local file had the more recent date time. I managed a workaround the
last time by using Explore to save the file directly to the server. I
then synchronized the site and it finally - after over an hour of
frustration put the edited file remotely.

It seems like this error message has been coming up in DW for years,
but Adobe doesn't document an such thing in the KB. Since I can do
everything outside of DW and have never gotten that error or any
related error, I have to wonder why the problem would lie outside DW.

Very frustrating. And i thought i was frustrated with our previous
server side CMS.
