Cannot Establish MySQL Connection 500 Intern Err

I am running IIS 5.x, PHP 5, MySQL, MySQL 4, DreamWeaver 2004 7.01 on an XP
machine. I've defined my site using PHP and MySQL. When I go to create a MySQL
Connection I get the error

HTTP Error Code 500 Internal Server Error

I've tried downgrading my PHP installation to 4.3, tried different MySQL
servers, and verified that my server address, user name, and password are
correct. This is urgent! Any help would be appreciated.

Are you running XP w/ SP2? I've seen a couple of posts where there were db connection problems with it...

No, I haven't applied SP2.

Since you've toyed with PHP, MySQL and XP looks okay, would it be too much trouble to fiddle with IIS or try Apache?

I would still want to stick with IIS. What kind of changes can I do to IIS
that would change DreamWeaver's behaviour?

This is usually because the paths in the site definition are set up
incorrectly.

Try going through my troubleshooting tutorial at:

It will help you understand how the connection process works, and should
help you fix any problems.
