Default Can I do this? - 07-03-2004 , 08:54 PM

Hi! I'm still pretty new using Dreamweaver and I've come across two things that
I can't seem to figure out. If anyone can help me out, that'd be great.

1) I'm making an online portfolio and I have it set up so that the links will
be on the right hand side of the page (as thumbnails), and I'd like the
corresponding images to show up on the left when I click the link. I'm using
Windows XP and DW MX 4 on a PC. I'm using tables and I guess I was thinking I
could do this...but I think I was thinking of frames. Is this possible using
tables? Or do I need to have each image have it's own page?

2) On two seperate pages I'm working on, there seems to be an i-beam space
that I can't get rid of. One is under a table that's inserted into a cell. The
other is under an image. There is nothing else but an i-beam underneath and I
can't get it to delete...nor do I know why it showed up there.

I hope these make sense...Let me know if you need any more information....
THANKS.
Kari

Although I don't usually recommend frames, your project seems to be one of
those for which frames seem ideal.

Set up a page with a left and right frame. Give the left frame a unique name
that you will use. such as "images". Your right frame should probably have
scrolling enabled. Put your thumbnail menu in the right frame and start with
the first full sized image in the left frame. If the name of the left frame
is "images", then each of the links in the right frame should have a target
of "images".

Give us a link to the page that is giving you problems, so we can see the
html.

Thanks for your help John.

I uploaded a page for you at http://members.cox.net/kebower/

The space is happening underneath the contact button image. I tried looking at
the code, but didn't notice a difference between it and the other buttons
before it (course, I'm pretty new...) I hope you see something, it's driving me
nuts.

Let me know if you have trouble seeing the page. I don't think I've ever
uploaded anything until now.

Like John, I rarely recommend frames as a layout approach. Unlike John, I
do not think this is a good application for them.

There are quite a few good ways to do what you are describing without coming
within 10 feet of those nasty frames. One of them is to use the ShowPic
extension available from the PVII site - http://www.projectseven.com/. It's
way better than buying into all the hinky downsides of frames.

I would need to see your code to diagnose this. All such problems can be
solved by examining the code.

Murray,

I'll check out that link for projectseven, thanks! And I posted a link to a
site, did I not do it correctly? If you can't see this page please let me know.
Or do I need to copy and paste my code?

Kari

Kari:

According to my measurements, those three buttons are on precisely the same
baseline, so I am not seeing the spacing you are seeing. Can you say more
about where I should look to see this?

I don't know where to look...everything looked fine in the code to me (and I
really don't read it well) It's a space directly underneath the contact info.
button. I suppose it's only noticeable in the DW file....it's not messing with
anything on the page, so maybe I should leave it alone. The other space issue I
have (another page) does affect my page...and I'd love to show you but I don't
know what space to publish to. Actually, I wanted to post what I did with the
project seven suggestion you gave me. I think I got it figured out with one
exception...the layer window shows up waaaaay to the left of where it is in DW.
Any suggestions for how to get it to stay put? I wanted to re-publish, but it's
telling me that DW has an internal error or something and won't let me update
the site....so....I'd love to show you....if you can get me through the
publishing mess I can... I can't wait to get a better handle on this software.

Okay, I give. I just tried to publish again and it worked this time...must've
been something server side??? Anyway, if you go to
http://members.cox.net/kebower and then go to the portfolio page you'll see
what I'm talking about. Thanks for all your help!!!

And then go to the portfolio page? That's the one that comes up at this
URI! And there are no links there.... 8)

So, the problem you are seeing is only in DW's Design View? I'd live with
it....

Misplaced layers are usually the result of having layers inside tables. I'd
need to see your code (or you could look) to know for sure.
