Default Building your own online forum? - 11-01-2004 , 06:19 AM

I saw a couple of people on this board have made their own online forums. I'm
trying to make up my own for my web site and I'm (kind of) half way there. I'm
using .asp/vb script with Dreamweaver for it, but I'm stuck. I can insert the
messages into the DB but I'm not sure how to set up the replies and such. I
wonder could some give me some direction on this?

My first attempt at a board is at -
http://www.irishwebsolutions.com/irishbandslist/forum_main.asp

Please give me any feedback and if anyone has any info on this kind of thing
please reply or email me - irishunsigned (AT) hotmail (DOT) com

Thanks, Caoimha?n

Why reinvent the wheel? Use one of the canned ones - like

I am surprised DW doesn't have something like that "built-in". The "other guys" do this pretty well.

Why?

I wouldn't want MM to spend a penny of development on such a specialized
application when there are so many free and easy 3rd party solutions.

What "other guys" do this? I know for a fact that Adobe GoLive and Microsoft Frontpage BOTH do not have premade forum scripts so please tell us of which unknown program has this built-in.

SnakEyez - FACT: FP does this - they call them 'discussion webs' Murray - I am
not sure why you make such a statement - If i am developing a product -
wouldn't I want to keep my users attention focused on that product? If you tell
people go look elsewhere - well, maybe there is something out there better than
DW -( I am not saying there is) - and while they are searching for your free
forum script, they just may find it.

It's not likely that searching for one of the 3rd party forum apps is going
to also uncover something that competes with Dreamweaver.

I just do not feel that such a specialized non-mainline app is something I
want DW development dollars spent on. I want better CSS support, and a
better UI, and a better development tool, not something that can easily be
obtained on the web.

Can't MM implement something for forums like they do with paypal?
At least now I can't feel guilty for using FP & DW on the same site.

Huh?

Sounds like a mess to me.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you want, though.

Murray, If I can't use DW to create forums, then I don't need to feel guilty
for using FP to do this part of my site, because you are telling me "there
are so many free and easy 3rd party solutions", well for me FP is that 3rd
party solution. Now, for the person who needs to be told go out there and
search for the 3rd party solution, DW may be too complicated a program for that
person. Stumbling across FP, which does it for them, they might come to the
realization that FP is a more basic solution to DW (which it no doubt is ) yet
it does what they want (a forum - and without ANY scripting on the preogrammers
part). Now has anyone done the cost analysis of developing an implementable
forum over the possibilty of losing customers to say FP?
