Default Best dreamweaver 8 configuration for team work? - 06-13-2008 , 03:19 AM

Hi all,
I would like to know what is your workflow when working on a website
from different workstations on the same network (windows and mac osx
workstations).

I would like to keep only one copy of source files (htm, php, png,
psd, fla...) somewhere and use them in team.

Is this possible or have I to keep multiple copies of the same source
files on every workstation?

TIA for any comment/suggestion.

tony

Each workstation would have the following site definition -

1. Local site is LOCAL to the workstation.
2. Remote site is the shared, remote network drive.
3. Checkin/checkout is enabled

The workflow would be -

* team member checks out a file from the shared resource
* file is locked so that nobody else can check out that file
* edits are performed locally by team member
* when completed, file is checked in to the shared resource
* file is unlocked so that others can now edit that same file

ONE workstation would have an additional site definition -

1. Local site is the shared resource
2. Remote site is the production server

The workflow would be -

* when files are ready to publish, use this site to connect to the shared
resource as a local site
* select files to be published and push them to the production server

Never use this second site for edits.

This is the ONLY arrangement that will work in a team environment using only
dreamweaver's resources. It is not without its problems. Consider the
difficulties when multiple files use the same CSS file (a not unusual
setup), or when you have used Templates....

yes, it's on my working workstation.
I've setup easyphp on this machine and shared the www folder so that
other user on the network can access them.

I'm using this config since 2 or 3 weeks but I'm not really satisfied
with the way dreamweaver manage team work. It's too easy to overwrite
a file by accident.

You are doing it wrong, you should be using Check in/check out. Look in
the help menu for it.

Hi steve,
I'm already using the checkin/out functions.

What I dont' understand is why dependent file aren't checked-in when I
check-in a php/html/asp file.

I have to sincrhronize the whole website (downloading from remote
folder) before updating such pages.

This happens for linked images for example.

ciao

That's why, I would suggest to use a source control system instead.
Subversion could be a good candidate.
