background activity anything but background

everytime I try to alt-tab from one app to DW, DW brings up the 'background
file activity' progress bar and continues there for several seconds - its very
slow and very annoying.

how to I stop this, or make it happen in the background?

its driving me insane - and making me really regret getting DW!

it takes sometimes 2minutes before I can use DW!

i might just do something simple like make a change to a file - then jump to
the browser, refresh then jump back to DW. NOW - DW starts doing its
'background' thing - meanwhile DW is unsuable - it does a checkout status - not
that it needs to - the problem is it takes ages, its not nessary, it makes DW
unsable for too long - I just want to use it and not be dicked around!

What is it about your site setup that we don't know? Can you describe the
environment?

I have a local site but no remote site - I am also using MS visual source safe.

I have disabled the DW cache.

The box is

Pentium 4
512mb
its only about 4 weeks old - DW has been on the computer now for about 2 weeks.

I can't imagine why this simple arrangement would be giving you that. Do
you use VSS on all your sites? Is it possible that it's the intervention of
VSS causing this?

There is no way to change the behavior of that activity as far as I know.

Ok - might try that if I get some spare time.

the site is hundreds of files - manly perl files.

I only have about 2 - 3 open at a time though.
