Default ASP -v- PHP - 11-18-2004 , 02:59 AM

Hi Most of my site is written in ASP but I want to add a search facility
whereby when a member of the public wishes to find their nearest, (in this
case) member, they simply put in their own Postcode / Zipcode and the result
shows a list of local members starting with those nearest. This software is
available in ASP and PHP, but what are the differences and are there any
avantages in use one over the other? An evaluation copy of the software can be
downloaded http://www.cgi-interactive-uk.com/find_nearest_postcode_script.html
Regards Alan

If most of your site is already using ASP, it might be a good idea to stick
with the same language.

One thing that may sway your opinion is that ASP uses MS Access for
databases. Where as PHP uses MySQL. But it isn't too difficult to dump the
MySQL database into Access.

no scripting language is tied to any particular db.

When signing up for a host, is it fair to say that ASP is usually set up to
use with MS Access. And PHP is usually set up for MySQL.

From what I've read, it's possible to set up PHP to use Access as a database
but the coding can be cumbersome. Note: I've never set up a server in my
life, so I have no clue what you can and can't do. I'm only going by how my
previous hosts have set things up.

Hi everybody Thank you for your comments, I currently use ASP and MS Access, I
have never used PHP or MySQL, so based on your replies, I'll stay the way I am.
Thank you for your valued input. Regards Alan
