Allowing users to create their own pages?

I'd like to allow users of our intranet to have their own start pages with
information specific to them. While part of this will obviously require a
database etc... on the back end, I'm not sure where to start in relation to
just having giving them the ability to change a few things about the page and
it remain when they return. I'm thinking of pages like MyEbay or MyLycos
etc...

Can you gurus give me some direction/insight?
