Default advanced find and replace - 11-01-2004 , 12:26 PM

I'm updating a 1,000 page site and need to automate some of the process to
prevent carpal tunnel syndrome! Is there a way to use wildcards in a find and
replace command? For example, if the exisitng links from my site trigger a
defunct logging programm and I need to strip them down to the outside site, or
if I want to replace variable information in a tag sitewide? Find: <tag>
*** </tag> Replace with <tag>abcdefg</tag> Is it possible to
replace information that changes from page to page in one find and replace
query? Man I hope so!

Hi Reuben101, Dreamweaver's Find & Replace (Edit > Find and Replace) is
a very powerful feature, and would be perfect for what you are doing (i.e. same
change across multiple pages, etc.). But, be warned that it _is_ very powerful
and if you don't have exactly the expression you need, you can really mess up
your pages by changing things you didn't want changed. Please take the time to
look around the Find and Replace's features, and do some testing be fore doing
the real thing. Also, Dreamweaver's File and Replace recognizes regular
expressions. when you open Find and Replace, click the Help button for a link
to all the characters and their use in regular expressions. I hear tell
there's an extension that does find and replace. Don't know what/where it is,
but some seem to like it better. Regards, Chris

I don't quite understand how to do this yet. For instance, if I want to
remove a table sitewide that contains different info on each page but identical
info in the top and bottom how would I structure the find and replace query to
delete the entire table on every page across the entire site?

Ah, I see the situation more clearly now. I thought it was all the same info.
Honestly, trying to remove a large chunk of HTML, like a table, with different
content within, using find and replace I think is asking for trouble. Other
than by hand, I can't think of a single, safe way to do what you require.
Sorry. Anybody else?
