Default Absolute Beginner - 07-14-2003 , 07:43 AM

past I have put various basic things like photos on a webpage, and
that's about it. At least it worked! Now after an enforced gap of
about 12 months, I'm starting again from zero. I have just put a basic
photo on a page to see that everything is set up correctly, and it
seems, it's not. When I try to access this page I get,
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
My account and everything is valid and it's worked fine in the past,
so could any kind soul drop to the level of a complete beginner and
supply any pointers? Or direct me a site that would help. I've tried
all the basic tutorials, but still scratching my head. :-(
Thanks
Frank

Thanks for a fantastic response, I'm totally underwhelmed! Sure glad
I came to this group now. :-( Probably a bit too technical for you
all, eh!

Frank, I think you're misunderstanding how newsgroups work. Nobody is
required to answer anybody's questions. People answer questions they're
interested in, and ignore questions they're not interested in. It's not
a free helpdesk where you can demand answers within a certain timeframe.

If you require timely answers to your questions, you should check out
the available commercial services.

That said, the error message you mention means that there is no index
file on the server - either you forgot to upload it, or it doesn't have
the right filename. It should be index.html or index.htm.

Matthias, thanks very much for for taking the time to reply, you are a
refreshing voice in the wilderness!
I'm well aware of how newsgroups work, I have been accessing them for
many years, although the first time in this group. I generally
frequent Spanish groups, Photoshop, digital cameras etc. and whilst I
appreciaste that no one is under any duty to reply, I have generally
found these groups to be more responsive and helpful than this one.
There seems to be a lot of traffic in this group, perhaps it's only
geared to more advanced users and they do not readily accommodate
"newbies".

Plus I'm sure that the last four lines of you post contain the answer
to my problem, so thanks a lot for that.
